I've used it in all 3 of my Fords' crankcases. I've also performed an Auto-Rx treatment on the 5R55E in my Ranger and the AX4S auto tranny in my '97 GL.
Here's a shot of my SHO's upper engine (3.0L DOHC) @ 157K miles after I had done an Auto- RX treatment a few months earlier. (The heads are gold-colored from the factory).
There is no sludge or varnish whatsoever to be found anywhere on the cams or top of the heads. The other bank looks the same.
Also, note the camshaft chain/tensioner assembly in the lower right-hand corner of the pic, near the coilpack. There's one tensioner for each bank. They are operated hydraulically and lubricated by way of small oil feed holes. If these holes get restricted by dirt/sludge/varnish etc., the tensioners don't function properly, leading to premature wear of the pads and chains. I was very happy to see that that my SHO's cam tensioners were working perfectly and that oil feed holes were clear.
Joe what did it look like before the treatment????
I don't know, to be honest. I never had the covers off before, and I bought the car used.
I'm pretty confident that some serious cleaning went on, though, just by the look of the oil and filters during both the cleaning and rinse phases. The same can be said when I used Auto-Rx on my Ranger's 4.0L and the 3.0L in the Taurus GL.
I like the fact that ARX does not in any way dilute the oil or mess up the oil's properties, unlike solvent-based cleaners. ARX just kind of goes along for the ride and does its job.
Well anyway Joe it looks all "Spic & Span" clean inside.
Are you sure you didn't run a dose of "Black Draught" throught it...... oh wait a minute, thats for our innards, you know "makes ya feel all fresh & clean inside"!!!!! lol
Well it doesn't seem to have over done nor have gotten after anything so far & as long as your satisfied with the troube free results, thats what really matters.
Really would have been nice to have before & after photos though, as it could have made a stronger visual point.
I'm with you on the strong solvent type flushes. Those deposts didn't get in our engines overnight, so imo they shouldn't be removed that way. Nice & slow, over time, like they were deposited, is the best way to remove them, less chance of clogging something really important up imo.
This post has some interesting "along the way" & before & after engine photos, along with some before & after oil pressure & engine compression numbers.
With all the varnish deposits the engine had, I suspcted it must have had piston ring land deposits too & later found his before & after compression changes, that seem to corroborate that.
Anyway, for those interested in some before & after info, poke around here. http://www.auto-rx.com/rms13/index-1.htm

Funny that you mention it, the Auto-Rx does smell pretty darn good, it's kinda sweet, almost like evergreen...
