Was driving home and the u-joint snapped at the rear of the driveshaft. Pulled her home and the extension on the transmission between it and the transfer case was busted. Anyone know what could have caused this?
Sounds like the tranny or engine locked, caused the axle to spin the shaft, and twist the t/c with enough force to break the adapter. Just a hypothosis, is the tranny good now, is the t/c good?
The fluid has ran out of the transmission but when you fill it up it will go into gear. The transfer case will also go into gear but due to the adapter being broken it causes the transfer case to jump back and forth. The drive shaft was removed when I pulled it home. This seems to be a issue with the transfer case does anyone elso agree?
Id say when the driveshaft let go thats what did the damage , I assume the driveshaft got caught in some part of the body , frame or suspension as it was still turning , that amount of torque can do all kinds of damage . Exactly where was the driveshaft when you looked to see what was wrong ? Youll have to pull the T/C , Adapter & maybe the trans to see what kind of damage occured . If youre lucky thats all it did was break the adapter . Id be more worried about the output shaft of the trans being bent or other internal damage to the T/C & or Trans .
i had a problem on my 85 transfer case that i caught early, but it sounds like i would have had same damages you did if i did not catch it.
i took tranny and case and extension out to put in my 88, aand i cleaned them. i noticed that the extension housing had a series of cracks going around it. they looked as if they were caused by twisting the unit.i had lost a small amount of tranny lube regularly for the previous year or so, and apparently this is where it was leaking.
i had the case welded and reinforced,a nd have put 11,000 miles on it since.
