I have a new 08 F-550. Is it just my rig or common on the new 08's? I was thinking it was because chassis truck came with standard temporary one light on each side at the back. After completing the custom bed, I have two full size LED's on both sides of the truck. The turns signals are faster than normal. My thinking now is because the LED's draw so little current, there is not enough load on the circuit (flasher) to slow them down. I ask my dealer and he said that the 08 does not have a flasher per say, it is now built in the control logic of the PCM. This means not easily changed. Any of you 08 owners have a problem with turn signal flashing too fast????
thanks
Even if the PCM is in control of the 'flasher" you are still going to need a greater load at the light so the thing does not think it has a bad light. I would just invest in a few resistors to install across the lights to simulate the load. Easy fix really. Have not had a chance to fiddle with an 08 yet, but electricity never changes.
I believe you can switch out the flasher with one that is appropriate to the load of the LED's. Installing resistors to simulate the load would use the same amps as actually having regular bulbs, correct?
You could either go for an Electronic Flasher (they don't care how big or small of a load, they blink at the same rate) or get some in-line resistors WITH heat sinks. THEY GET HOT!!!!!! Be sure they're not touching anything plastic. This has been learned from experience. We have them on our service trucks.
If the F-550 uses the same flasher as the F-250/350 then you can use the
Trico EP-27 electronic flasher which will solve your problem.
I picked mine up at Autozone, but most auto parts stores should have it.
I have not tracked it down but according to the dealer, it has an electronic type flasher built in which is not replaceable. It is actually programmed into the PCM. He suggested letting the shop mess with the programming to try to alter... My original thoughts were adding some resistors like you all said... That is probably going to be the easier way.... I am still waiting on the wiring diagrams from Helm. Atleast from them I can find out where things are in the system since it is different from 07 back super duty's..... I also noticed the front lights blink fast as well as the ones I added. I have separated the turn/stop from the back by adding a relay on both sides at the rear. I get the signal to trip the relay from the front turn signal. This way running and stop are on red LED and turn signal only on the yellow LED. At first I thought that has something to do with it but even disconnecting back ones and having the temp factory light boxes, they still are way too fast... I may try the resistors this weekend...
I got the front windows tinted this afternoon and had time to go by the dealer. I had them do the reflash on the DPT recall and talked with the tech about the blinkers. He said to replace flasher with electronic to fix. He was pretty sure it has the external flasher and should not be a problem... So will find one of these that you guys were talking about....
thanks
