Anyone have the procedure for throttle position sensor (TPS) replacement?
I know you have to remove the throttle body to get to it, anyone have a
service manual with some pics showing it. Going to do this on my 94 F150,with the 5.0 AT. Thanks...
YOu dont need a service manual to do this. Also you can pick up the gasket at autozone for 2 bucks. The replacement is prety straight forward! Just take out the four bolts from the throttle body, coolant lines that feed the throttle body is yours are attached and not bypassed, disconnect the one vaccume line and your good to go. Now keep in mind im telling you how to do this right off the top of my head. OH yeah disconnect the battery first!
On the 5.0 you need to check the voltages and set them AT .5 TO 1 volt with the throttle closed and 4 to 5 volts with it wide open per the Haynes too. For a 94 it says to put the neg probe on the gray/red and the pos probe to the gray/white wires.
I haven't figured out how to do that with the TPS mounted on the bottom where mine is yet......but I haven't replaced it either.
Like Stealth says, it's pretty simple. I swapped mine without actually removing the TB. Here's the TB removal procedure description out of the Ford manual (Sorry no pics, couldn't get them to reproduce properly in the copy/paste but they don't tell you anything your eyes couldn't anyhow):
Throttle Body <O</O
Removal<O</O
1. CAUTION: When disconnecting throttle cable from ball stud, use a screwdriver or similar tool close to the stud and pry slowly. Pulling by hand may damage the cable.<O</O
Disconnect throttle linkage at throttle ball. Disconnect C6 (5.8L only) transmission linkage from throttle body (9E926).<O></O>
2. Disconnect throttle position sensor and idle air control valve wiring connectors.
3. Remove engine coolant hose connectors and vacuum lines as necessary.
4. Remove four throttle body bolts.
5. Carefully separate throttle body from upper intake manifold (9424).
6. Remove and discard gasket between throttle body and upper intake manifold.
Installation
1. NOTE: If scraping is necessary, be careful not to damage gasket surfaces of throttle body and intake manifolds, or allow gasket material to drop into manifold.
Make sure that both throttle body and upper intake manifold gasket surfaces are clean.
2. Install throttle body gasket on the four studs of the upper intake manifold.
3. Install throttle body to upper intake manifold.
4. Secure throttle body to upper intake manifold with four retaining bolts. Tighten to 16-24 N-m (12-18 lb-ft).
5. Reinstall engine coolant hoses and vacuum connections as necessary.
6. Connect air control valve and throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connectors.
7. Connect throttle cable and transmission linkage to throttle body.
Good Luck
I don't know about doing all of that! I just slapped mine in over 1.7k miles ago and haven't had any problems. I have asked a few mech. buddies and they say its not nessary to do the above.
had to change out the TPS on the 95 302 i had, it wasn't hard, just time consuming...i did pull the TB, looked like a prime time to clean it...
not really it only took me 15 mint o get my old one out and new one it, but if your cleaning the throttle body I can see how you say its time consuming.
