Limp Mode

Does my 97 5.4L have limp mode? If so, how does it shut down 4 of the 8 cylinders? I had a cam problem (gear turned on one cam) and had the cams replaced (not at Ford) and now the mechanic is telling me that the cams are defective. There is no compression on the back 2 cylinders passenger side and the front 2 drivers side. Seems strange that they are bad in pairs and opposite sides. Could the mechanic do something stupid and activate limp mode? HELP

I’m not sure if the 97’s did, but ether way the computer just shuts off the fuel. So you should still have compression.
