Ball joints -How often

When I had my alignment done, they said there was some wear ( 3 to 5 thousandths) but they would probably go another 20,000 miles. I have some play in my steering wheel and was wondering if new ball joints would fix this.

I have a 2001 F250SD with over 200,000 miles. Never replaced mine. I even run 37x12.5x17 for the last 75,000 miles. You want NO play in them. Jack the truck and try to rock the tire by grabing it at the top and bottom while someone else watchs. I guess I got a good set because over size tire will kill ball joints and rough roads and I do plenty of both.
