1988 Ford Bronco starter problems when engine is hot...?

I've replaced the alternator twice, the battery, the solenoid, and the starter three times.

My truck starts fine when the engine is cold, but after driving for 45 minutes, it will not start again until the engine cools down. This has been a continuing problem for the last 6 months, a brand new starter works for about 2 months then it has problems again when the engine gets hot.

Any ideas as to what I should do to get my truck starting again without any problems??

Thanks,
Anthony E.

Does this truck have a new set of headers on it? Build a shield for the starter or get rid of the headers. Check battery cable connections all six ends. Check timing for too much advance.

Not only would I check the cables, but if they are considerably old, I would replace them, 4ga minimum, bigger is better :-) Many times the cable gets corroded inside the insulation, not readily visible. When the motor gets hot, it can take more amp to turn it over,,,, Humm you are talking about getting the starter to turn?? right?? If you're talking about a crank but no start, that's another deal...

welding cable is good for batty and grnd. connection...
also recal something someone wrote here awhile ago about the tach pulse sender in their distr.;...a hairline crack that opened up when warm (hot).

Just an update - I finally got stranded last night, the car wouldn't even start when cold. It just turned over a bunch, until finally wearing down the battery.

This time I towed it to a Ford dealership, and they did a diagnostic...saying that the fuel pressure is fine (batt was a little low), starter and alternator were fine. However they want to replace the ignition component: stater ($65), module ($100), & coil ($50). + $230 labor.

they said two of the spark plugs weren't firing properly.

I recently had my engine rebuilt, shouldn't this all be brand new stuff? I'll have to check my receipt for sure to see if they replaced the distributor cap.

Hey I got an 88 also. I've had this problem on two occasions the first time I went through what you've gone through with the starters, the module, and the coil. The second time this happened I looked elsewhere for the solution. I started by going back to the Motorcraft starter. The next things I replaced were the battery and starter cables. Finally I checked the area around the starter and as it turned out my catalytic converter(cat.) was blocked and the heat in that area seemed to be internally damaging the cheaper starters. Long story short check your cables, your starter and your exhaust. Hope this helps. If not I may have some other ideas.

Well, i finally got the starter problem fixed.
It was a freyed negative battery cable.

That is the cheapest damn thing to replace, I should've done that first. Since september I've spent about $1200 trying to fix this starter problem...I got ripped off/mis-diagnosed by the Ford dealership, and my old mechanic's solution was to keep replace the starter.

Oh well.
Anyway, now the truck is "missing", runs like complete crap on the road...I'm going to try new plugs before I take it in.
Anyone know what to gap them at?

I've got the 5.0 and the gap is .044 that is I think pretty standard for most those broncos.

If it is running like "complete crap"...and the more pedal you give it...the better it gets....might want to consider the M.A.P. sensor(manifold absolute pressure).

That is assuming it is fuel injected.

I'm not a mechanic, but am an electrical tech, and got the codes out of my truck and it pointed to this electrical device. Replaced it and it is running fine.

Good Luck,

Brien
