How many of you dislike your 3.73's and wish you had a 4.10 instead? I know i do! My mileage sucks and so does the power with even stock wheels n tires. I couldnt imagine putting bigger tires and leaving the gears stock. I want to put 4.10's with front and rear lockers. I use ARB air lockers (fr/r) on my excursion and have worked really well with my 40" tires and the tourqe from the diesel. What lockers are you guys using? also just curious whats the biggest size tire I could put on a stock 4x4? although a lift might be on its way, need to find out my options.
I've got a 3.0L with 4.10 gears, running P235's. VERY glad I have those 4.10's. I have plenty of power with this set-up. My truck is no slouch as-is.
I hear a lot of guys dog the 3.0L, but most of them seemt to have 3.73 or 3.52 gears, so I can understand their position. I plan to move up to BFG 255's after I eat a little more tread from my 235's.
The 4.10 gears, IMO, should be a minimum gearing for anything with a V6.
The 3.73's aren't that bad a gear, but of course you'd know that the front gets the same treatment if you go 4.10. As far as the mileage goes, she's not even close to break in yet. She should improve. Wendell Borror's ride has 4.0 with 4.10 gears and I beleive he wrote that his got poorer mileage till he got something like 10k on her. He's getting around 22/24 with a couple of simple mods and synthetic lubes. That 4.0 is an excellent engine and one fella was real happy with his new 4.0/4.10 truck.
Stick around and search the threads. You'll learn all kinds about that truck and what you can do with her.
I can't see how you guys complain The 3.45s I have in my truck do just fine, even with the 27" Tall All Terrians. Then again with the 5spd, I have a 1st gear start ratio of like 12.84. Plenty and get up and go for the little truck. 4.10s with the way I can drive would prolly be worthless in 1st gear.
I wish I had 3.73's, all my 94 Splash extended cab has is a 3.08 in it, even with the 5 spd and 4.0 it's slow. But I do tend to get decent mileage on the highway with it. Although towing and hills don't tend to mix to well with it.
3.73's are about the ideal ratio with stock tires, go with bigger tires and yes lower gearing would help.with to low a ratio it will pull anything but will reallly use the fuel and not have any top end, to high a ratio and you have no power, its hard on the clutch and you also get poor fuel economy because the motor is lugging. keep the motor rpms in the right spot of the powerband will give you the best results. all in all if you are unhappy with 3.73's you may as well skip 4.10's and go up to 4.56 gearing. the 3.0 makes its power higher in the rpm band than the other ford small chassis truck engines and should probly have 4.10's stock. ive found driving with a vaccum gage real imformative, i can maintain a steady reading more at 45 than 55. really shows what wind resistance does.
I have 3.73's. I drive all interstate. I do not want 4.10's anymore. Something about crusing at 3K all day doesn't appeal to me. You 4X4 guys need them with taller tires.
CMOS, the 2004 3.0 peaks at 154hp @ 5200rpm and 180lb-ft @ 3900rpm.
