Tracton lock rear end

Just got a 2001 XLT ranger 4x4 with a tracton lock rear, 4:10 gears.
Not sure how it works, or are they any good.
Thanks.

Hey V10runner. Your traction lock rear end is an aftermarket rear end? What did the fella that sold it to you tell you about it?

If your refering to the factory L/S or 'posi' rear end, it's a clutch pack type diff. The new factory Torsen and aftermarket Detroit tru-trac use gears to control the torque bias from one side to the other and are much better at doing it and last forever whereas the clutch pack type eventually degrades and have to be rebuilt after several years. You check the clutch type by jacking a rear wheel off the ground, truck in park, and use a torque wrench on a lug nut to see how much torque it takes to beat the load on the clutches

The stock traction-lok works well for most people. The exceptions are those who do a lot of off-roading, or drag race with stickies.

Spinning the tires around corners can take years off the life of a clutch pack. The good news is they aren't hard to rebuild.

Regarding off road use, the rear end is stock, just wondering if i need
to worry about it. Have a big place to play, mostly hills on a rough fire
road, some mud and rocks. Not that bad.
Thanks for the input.

no worries mate!! te upgrade to something like a Detroit tru-trac or Torsen involves swapping out just the carrier. Uses the same ring gear and axles. The 8.8 rear end is a good strong unit for the Ranger. With those 4.10 gears, torque load is reduced compared to something like 3.73. Take care of it. Change lube from time to time depending on useage.

Have fun
