I'm thinkin' of true duals once my 75K warranty period is nearly up... New headers/pipes all the way back to two indepedent cats and on out to "I'm not sure" what else. Its really going to depend on the market then and if I still have the truck obviously.
I think a lot didn't want to deal with all the "corrective" measures involved with re-assigning the O2 sensors and everything else that may have to be moved or modified for a true dual set-up.
I contacted a reputable muffler shop out by me and spoke to the owner himself. I told him I was thinking about high flow cats and true duals all the way back. He proceeded to tell me that hardly anyone runs "true" duals anymore. Also that the High Flow cats would need to be replaced every 2 years. True?
He quoted me $500 out the door with a cut from the Y back, with a SIDO Flowmaster 40 or 50 series, I forget, and pipes out the sides behind the wheels. Chrome tips extra apparently. This is with 3" piping all the way.
Now for myself, I've seen plenty of pictures from galleries of people running "true" duals and having it done for a descent price. Personally, from my experience with this muffler guy, it sounded to me like he didn't want to have to do the work.
I'm in the same mindset with you though, true duals make me think of a truck that can breathe a little better and the sound would be alot smoother.
yeah the tech who ripped me off one flowmaster quoted me at $500 for true duals at first but went down to $450. didnt take the deal thank god. didnt know if high flow cats ahve to be replaced though. id like to know the answer to that too
After looking at my truck, I wonder if the huge gas tank is in the way of true dual pipes. I would like to cut the "Y" pipe and run two turbo mufs straight back from the cats, this would give a nice deep tone and make engin breath better without being to loud for my taste. Any thoughts??
No problem with the gas tank, the duals can run in the stock pipe location with plenty of room. I have true duals with H pipe on my 05 Fx4, that is all I have run on my last 3 trucks. Cut a little before the Y then run them side by side put in an H pipe this will take care of any low end torque loss. I bought 2 magnaflow 5x11 mufflers part#12586 took them to my muffler guy (good friend) who does excellent work. Total cost 400$ oh yea I added stainless tips. I have had this setup for 2 years well worth it IMO. My cats are after the manifold, no 02 sensor to move. It sounds awesome, with a decent CAI and custom tune (not one out of a box) it will really wake the truck up. Next round of mods are some goodies from Troyer
1. you don't need high flow cats. the stockers can run 400+ HP before you need to consider replacing them
2. true duals will not affect your warranty or your o2 sensors as long as you cut the Y off as far back from the cats as possible
3. you have plenty of room to install the true duals.
4. if you do get a custom true dual, get them to install an H pipe. It will scavenge the gasses and help you make a little more power.
I didn't get true duals because of the price. local shops wanted $500+ for the work using no name mufflers and aluminized piping. So I got the SS Magnaflow SIDO for cheaper.
I have actually seen dyno runs where going from two to one to two pipes produces more torque than two straight pipes. In fact look at a lot of setups and you find a crossover pipe between the two.
