Does anybody have any idea what vehicle, or which rear end the axles come out of that can be narrowed properly? The axles out of my 74 F100 are slightly narrower right after the splines for about 5 inches, and then get beefier. I want to narrow the rearend, and the guy at the machine shop said I have to have the right axles, without the taper, otherwise he cant re-spline them. Any thoughts? Or am I doomed for a set of aftermarket axles?
Strange S/St axles are priced so that resplining axles isn't worth the effort. I'm sure Moser's pricing is much the same. They will be stronger and a lot less hassle. Don
I will check it out, but from what I have seen so far, a pair of aftermarkets run 600 or so, and I can get these cut down and resplined by a reputable shop for 200.
You will have to check it out and see if the axels I have will work. I am thinking these are good specimens. 5 bolt on a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<st1:address w:st="on">5.5 Bolt Circle</st1:address></st1:Street> and ½ inch studs. Both axels are 33.187 long from outside axel flange to end of axel. 1.312 diameter by 31 splines. If you want to get further details email me at gostride2@hotmail.com
If you're narrowing an axle for an application that has HP then you should step up and buy after market axles. Replining the old axles will cause you to lose the case hardening of the factory splines. It will only be a matter of time before the repline axle splines start to twist, if beaten on or used for heavy hauling.
