right now i have a ford 9 inch under my 81 f150, Ive been looking for a nine from a pre 1973 f150 as they are 4 inches narrower allowing me to run the wheels i want/have and some wider tires. I know im going to have to have the leaf spring pads and shock mounts moved farther apart to accomadate my 81 frame width. basically my question is can i use the third member from my 81 31 spline axle in an older one? And if the older one is 28 spline can i still use my 3rd member if i buy 31 spline axles for the older rear? Im not at all concerned about brakes or anything as im going with a disc kit. thanks
3rd member will swap so long as you have the correct spline axles. Older trucks had both 28 and 31, while 80+ only had the 31, according to everything I have seen/read.
from my reading it appears i can put a 31 spline 3rd in a 28 spline case as long as it is of the larger bearing variety. The small bearing ends need to be machined to fit a 31 spline axle which weakens them. btw thanks for the quick response
the only time you can put a 31 spline third in a 9" is when your axles shafts are 31 spline, same goes for 28 spline third / shafts. Big bearing or small bearing it makes no difference, My current 31 spline 9" is a small bearing housing (Came this way from the factory).
small bearing for 31 spline 9 - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board It sounds like the part that needs to be machined is the carrier. So if i use my 3rd it should be i direct bolt in all i need extra is 31 spline axles and different bearings. Greyf150 thanks, and do you have any problems with premature bearing failure? Its sounds to be an issue with the aftermarket ones. I havent actually found a rear yet i just want to keep my options open in case i cant find a 31 spline
