1966 Rear Axle Width

I have a 1966 F-250 with a huge dana rear end in it and I am going to convert the axles over to 5 lug for my restoration.

My question is... whats the width from drum face to drum face on these trucks? The reason I ask is that I have a 9" out of a 1978 F150 that I'd like to put in but have read that they need to be narrowed.

I know that the spring pads and shocks will have to be moved as the frames on the 66 is much narrower than the 78... but will the axle need to be narrowed??

Thanks guys!!

drum face to drum face it's about 60.5 inches (i say about because it's hard to measure by myself) But i'm close! up to 1972 is the same width and will bolt right in your truck.

Use of the 78 rear will be about 5/8 inches wider than the front track on your 66.

The rear axle was widened to match the front I beam track in 73. And I beams were additionally widened in 78.

Relocation of the spring pads is all that is needed to accommodate the swap.

so if I add lowering I-beams, then the track widths should match pretty darn close then? I was hpoing to rebuilf the rear end and be able to put it in without narrowing it... Sounds like that is a good possiblilty.

FWIW - i installed a complete rearend from a 76
f - 150 under my 66 to get the front and rear wheels to align. it took a coupla days as i had to move the spring purches and the shock absorber attachments. with the stock wheels on it there is about a half an inch of space between the tire edge and the inside fender well. in my opinion it looks much nicer from the back and drives a little better also. but you could also put a nine in rim on it and would prolly accomplish the same thing/ Dutch

Yes, The AIM and DMJ beams are based on the factory beam width and will be about the same width as a 73 to 79 nine inch rear.

If you have ever followed a slick with stock rims and tires you can see the front tires from directly behind.
