I seem to recall that MII crossmebers for 53-56 frames are 4" wider than stock so you need to add 2" to both sides with either 2" rack extemsions or longer tie-rod ends. I had a 1979 Mustang power rack with tie-rod ends and it's width was perfect for the Heidt's crossmember. Heidt's web site has some pretty good info 0- check it out.

I am installing a Fatman Fab MII on my truck. The lower control arm inner pivot points are wider apart than on a Mustang II (by about 2 inches I think). The MII rack mounting points on the cross member are offset to the left to keep the steering shaft further away from the motor for added clearence for exhaust manifolds or headers. Bacause of this, the left tierod doesn't need to be modified. The right side needs a rack extender added to move the right tierod pivot point out the same amount as the extra frame width (by about 2 inches I think). If the extra width is compensated for by installing longer tierods, you will be introducing bump steer to the suspention. As your suspention travels up and down, your wheel must remain in the same direction. If the wheel turns as the suspention travels with no change in steering input by the driver, this is called bump steer causing the truck to dart all over on a rough road. The proper way to correct for a wider frame is to make the inner pivot points of the tierod ends further apart by adding rack extentions. Here is a link to a tech article from Heidt's web site. http://www.heidts.com/heisinfo.htm Read the part about bumpsteer. It explains this much better than I can. If anyone wants me to I can get measurements from my truck when I get home from work this evening.
