how do you guys feel about the flag always being flown at half staff while at war, and heros dying everyday?? im for it.
we get things like the va tech massacre, tsunamis, earthquakes, 9-11, and other catastrophies all the time and the flag to be flown at half staff for a couple of days.
now considering the troop death surpassed the va tech rate over the last 4 days, not including today, and happens every week.
but you know what they get, more arguing from within our country and a 1 minute clip on media to report the NUMBER.
this isnt a political thread and dont want it to become one, doesnt matter about rep-dem, just the fact that our servicemen and woman, has a death everyday in this war, yet seems to be disregarded except by the ones that lost that particular person
The flag of a nation at half mast in my opinion should be only be used for really special situations.
I believe for a country to serve to the world how strong it is ...the OFFICIAL flag should fly at full mast as much as possible.
Fly your flag as high as you can
When 9/11 happened..that was an automatic...thing
For Hurricane disasters..I think the government of the state honouring its dead by flying the state flag at half mast is great..... but not flying Old Glory.
Symbolism !
Our dead soldiers are re-patriated with a Canadian flag draped across their coffin.
If we flew thew flag at half mast when a soldier dies..we would have to hire someone full time to raise and lower it.
What does it mean to you ?
My Dad died on April 14th.. I hoisted the flag of Saskatchewan (province he was born in) the day he died .....it will fly until he is buried.....on the April 28th.
I do think the Honor of our troops killed in battle is done with a military burial and the stars and stripes drapped over the casket and then folded and given to the parents, wife, husband, etc... Even though our troops are dying everyday it seems, keeping our flag flying as high as possible symbolizes the Honor of our country and what our troops are fighting for.
Half Mast symbolizes the respect the country has for certain unexpected events.
I agree with Dennis. Flying the flag at half-staff should be reserved for extraordinary events. And, IMO, it should be a one-day thing, even after a massive tragedy like 9/11- that way, you aren't trying to "rate" how bad the event was, or how important the person was.
Do it every day, and it doesn't mean much anymore...
Unless you guys are on a ship the term is half-staff, not half-mast.
Sorry, it's one of my many pet peeves. Probably related to my stint on the Air Force Honor Guard.
For anybody interested, the proper way to display at half-staff is to briskly raise the flag to the top for a moment, then solemnly lower it to the half mark. Then at sunset, the flag is raised again before bringing it down for the night.
Only the President and Governors are authorized to order half-staff displays of US Flags.

I think we are too quick to lower it. It cheapens the honor for those who truly deserve it like soldiers. You should have to have done more for your country than pay taxes before they give such an honor.

I think part of the problem is that politicians are afraid to say no. Who wants to look like a heartless SOB when you've got funerals going on all over the place? It's a no-win situation to be in.
I never knew there were any rules for flying/displaying a flag. I guess the people that think they're being patriotic wearing a flag shirt are really being disrespectful.

I really think it has to do with how the rule is interpretted. Wearing a shirt with a flag image on it isn't a problem (army uniforms do that), but wearing an actual flag (the kind you can fly from a pole) is wrong. The example I remember most is when Kid Rock was wearing an actual flag with a hole cut into it during the Super Bowl a couple years ago. I think he probably did it out of ignorance rather than malice, but it still looked really bad.
