Unless you guys are on a ship the term is half-staff, not half-mast.
Sorry, it's one of my many pet peeves. Probably related to my stint on the Air Force Honor Guard.
For anybody interested, the proper way to display at half-staff is to briskly raise the flag to the top for a moment, then solemnly lower it to the half mark. Then at sunset, the flag is raised again before bringing it down for the night.

You also beat me to mention the proper way to lower the flag.
Something happened in Canada in 1997 that I lowered 5 flags for a cultural centre.

In Canada, the Canadian Flag MUST fly the highest in any grouping.
Once my new flagpole is erected the Canadian Red Ensign will be at the top with the Alberta Flag below it.
I believe we should fly the flag at half staff everytime a soldier, sailor, marine or airmen is killed, and if that means 24/7 365 then maybe people will realize that there are servicemen and women being killed everyday.
