I know there is a specific forum for this, but I've gotten my best info from the 73-79 usuals!
My '79 F-150 is an A/C truck, and everything in the climate control system works as it should. My system does hiss a little when I move the two levers and vacuum is distributed through the different lines, but only for a second or so...once the right flaps are open/closed it stops. Is this normal? A friend heard it and commented that I had a vacuum leak, but I'd always assumed I was just hearing the tubing empty out as vacuum was directed to it.
I worked for a man who had a '79 F-250 4x4 Camper Special in the early 80's. It was perfect, but I remember it also hissed.
I did dig into my dash this afternoon to have a quick look and none of the tubing looks too rough and it all seems to be secured.

Attached to the a/c-heater control panel (levers) in the dash, is the "Air Conditioner Vacuum Selector Control Valve" - translation = a multiported plastic vacuum manifold with a kicker switch. The plastic ports can break, the vacuum lines that attach to those ports swell over time and crack, the switch can short out. All these issues can and have been common problems with this part. Most Ford cars/trucks with a/c have used a similar type of A/C VSCV from the 1970's till today.

Great information, thanks. There are two areas where tubing goes in, three on the top of the unit, and five (I think) on the bottom. Each of these two connection points has an opaque rubber boot that serves as a coupler to the plastic ports on the "ACVSC". I think the the three going into the top boot are quiet, and that the bottom five are where I hear the hiss.
I'd guess that the longest it hisses is between 1-2 seconds. Idle changes slightly, but hardly at all (even when not engaging the AC compressor).
