A friend of mine has a 94 Ranger 4-wd with a 5 speed manual transmission. Occasionally, the transmission refuses to shift into gear from neutral. She has had the slave cylinder bled, the shift linkage checked, and the transmission oil drained and refilled by a mechanic but it has not helped. It seems to happen when the truck has warmed up. Starting out cold it shifts fine. After driving for awhile the transmission seems to stiffen up and that's when it won't shift...into any gear from neutral. Recently, she found that if she turns the engine off, then she can get it in gear and then restarts the engine. Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here? The next step is to have the transmission removed and rebuilt but that is an expensive job that she does not want to do since the truck is old and has high mileage (136,000+).
Sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging. The clutch linkage under the dash will wear to the point it will not provide enough movement to disengage the clutch. Look for a plastic bushing at the end of the rod going to the master cylinder.
I agree, the clutch may be dragging...Im not sure what could cause that with a hydrolic clutch, but she may be able to get by for a little bit if she shifts straight to a starting gear a traffic light instead of sitting in neutral. Also it may take a few secs of depressing the clutch all the way b4 the tranny slows to synchronize.
I dont believe it is a tranny problem.

It's mechanical before it's hydraulic. The pivots wear out. When you push the pedal all the way to the floor you are not getting enough travel to fully disengage the clutch. It happen all the time on the full size trucks they have a platic bushing for a pivot, go figure. eBay sells a heim joint (sp) 'fix'.
Some background: According to documents provided by the previous owner, 18 months ago the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing were replaced along with a new pilot bearing. Six months later the transmission went bad so it was replaced with a new one. The mechanic who did the transmission R&R speculated that when the new transmission was installed the shaft end may not have been properly lubricated or the pilot bearing was damaged when the new transmission was set into place. It was a $364 job.
