What does my transmission "learn"?

I have a 4R75E on my 4.2L XL (3.55). I was told that as you drive it, it learns about your driving habits. What exactly does it learn? What happens if a lot of different people drive it?

I assume that if I unplug the battery for a while it will forget whatever it learned.

So far the transmission is working great. If I had any complaint I'd say the 1-2 shift is a bit abrupt sometimes (Maybe because 1st feels kinda low?) and I think it goes into 4th a bit early. I'm tempted to turn the OD off around town, which for me ranges from 0 to 55mph, but over 45mph it gets a bit too far up there. We have some hills that are around 40-45mph and having the OD off gives me some engine braking, plus I know it is going to downshift anyways on the way up.

I like how "2" drives. I kinda wish it started out in "2" and then shifted normally after that. "2" seems a lot smoother and easier to modulate in slow stop-and-go traffic.

Finally, does the 4R75E lock the torque converter in 3rd?

Oh yeah: Where can I find detailed info for this transmission? Not specs. I have those. I'm talking serious technical stuff. (Hey, I'm bored and I like learning new stuff!)

Thanks in advance for any info!

The "learning" mode isn't as much about how you drive as how the transmission shifts in your "normal" driving. The computer monitors how long it takes to complete a shift for the varying conditions and them adjusts the line pressure to bring the shift timing into spec. Things that effect the shift timing are; load, throttle position, engine performance, etc... When you disconnect the battery and clear the memory, it resets back to the factory setting and then starts the process all over again.

Don't use 2nd and start/stop traffic as starting off in 2nd regularly will run the transmission temperature up.

on my old ranger I was told that if I did any intake/exhaust work to pull the battery and let the truck recalibrate with the new supplies.

Motors work differently. The PCM has a fuel trim circuit to adjust the air/fuel ratio to ensure it stays at 14.7:1.

I admit I haven't read the manual, but I'll ask anyways:

What is "2" for?

All I know is it sure is smooth. I assume it locks out all the gears except 2nd, and the smoothness is clutch slippage.

Thanks!

"2" allows 2nd gear starts to reduce wheelspin in low grip situations (snow, ice, mud). Also holds 2nd for low speed hill decent.
