I currrently have a 91 F-350 460 crew cab 4X4. Truck is getting pretty tired and I don't have to tell you about the gas mileage. I have narrowed my search for a new truck between a V10 or diesel. Leaning more toward the V10. In my price range, I can afford a 99-2001 truck. I will be looking at a 99 F-350 XLT crew cab 4X4 this week. I have heard great things about the V10, other than a spark plug problem. However, I have been hearing rumors about the 99 V10. Does this engine have less horse power than say a 2000, or 2001? Is this truck worth considering or should I set my sights on a newer V10. The truck is fully loaded and the owner is asking $10,000. Seems like a good deal, but I am concerned about the 99 V10. What should I look out for or be concerned with? Any advice would be appreciated.
The '99 is slightly lower HP than the 2000-2004. Some people that tow very heavy with the '99 V10 say that it runs out of breath before the WOT shift-point. In other words, if you're pulling 10K+ lbs uphill, you might hit a situation where the engine will be SCREAMING in 2nd gear but won't upshift to 3rd. When it does, it doesn't pull as well, so you put the pedal down, it downshifts back to 2nd and stays there. The 2000-2004 doesn't do that. It could be a tranny programming issue, though, and a tuner might help.
I appreciaete all the response I have had to my 99 question. Other than the HP difference anything else about this year truck I should know? I am also looking at a 2001 V10 shortbeb crew cab. It's only an XL, but it is suppose o be loaded. Power everything except seats.
The 275 hp rating comes from the E series rating. It was not re-rated when put in the NEW Super duty in early 99 models.
It was re-rated later at 295 hp due to the less restrictive intake on the F series.

Mine has 141k on it now, I just pulled 11k over an 8% grade (2mi long)reving @4000-4500 rpm's in 2nd going 45-50mph.
They work just fine but be sure to get 4:30's if you haul heavy.
