95 psd vs 05 v10

Have not posted on fte in a while, but have done lots of reading over threads about the v10. Im looking at upgrading from a 95 psd (turbo back exhaust, intake, and php tunes) to a 2005 f350 v10 4.30 drw 4x4 crew cab. torque shift tranny. So how will this compare towing my 11k boat around? Mpg don't concern me. I'm just hoping it will to the hills better. What are your experiences?

Thanks jeff

What is your current truck's configuration? DRW? F350? Gear ratio?

F250 supercab 4x4 srw. 35 inch tires. 4.10 gears. I wont even consider the v10 if its not a big gain in pulling.

So, stock specs on the 95 PSD are as follows.

210 HP @ 3,000rpm / 425 TQ @ 2000 RPM

And the 2005 V10 are as follows.

362 HP @ 4750rpm / 457 TQ @ 3250 rpm

Now the other big thing to consider is the transmission backing the motors. If your using the Automatic on your 95 then you have the E4OD with the following ratio's.

1st -- 2.71
2nd -- 1.54
3rd -- 1.00
4th -- 0.71

For the 2005 MY trucks they came with the 5R100 which has 5 gears and has a little bit deeper first gear. Couple that with the 4.30 rear end and the extra 152HP and I think there would be a difference. But then again with your truck being tuned it might not be that big of a difference.

1st -- 3.11
2nd -- 2.22
3rd -- 1.51
4th -- 1.00
5th -- 0.71

Best to test drive one. Look online and at dealers to see if one is available to test. The '05 is going to offer a lot more creature comforts and you can tune the 3V V10 and have a Beast! They are really great engines coupled to the 5r100 transmission that make a great drivetrain. It may be a night and day difference for you.

From reading through lots of info. This sounds like what most people say when they have had both trucks.

In my opinion the 3V V10 with the 5r transmission is a significant step up from anything offered in 1995 unless a huge amount of money has been thrown at mods.

A couple of things that are hard for previous diesel owners to get over are that 3000+/- rpm is perfectly normal on a medium hill and 4000+ rpm is their power sweet spot on a really big hill with a large trailer, 11k is in the medium sized load. And don't expect awesome gas mileage 12/14 highway if you're good and don't be disappointed with single digits while towing if you're working it hard and last is the engine sound, it will not sound like a diesel......

If you learn the shift points as I have on my stock 06 F350 V10 and have the skinny pedal in just the right place at the right time even towing twice what you're looking at for wheight in small to medium hills I very rarely need to rev over 3500 rpm, skinny pedal on the floor and 5k rpm is way beyond anything I've ever needed the truck to actually do but is a good adrenaline pump when it is used.

Just my opinion and others may disagree.

You need to drive one. I am in love with the V-10, but it isn't a diesel. The newer truck should out pull your current 95, but whether the margin of difference is satisfactory to you or not is questionable. I believe that it will pull better, but I don't believe it will be a night and day difference.
