Im in the process of getting a 1965 F-100 shortbed. The body seems to be in good shape and there was no cancer that was staring me in the face when i looked at the truck. I checked the rocker panels and such places where its comon for such things to show up. Is there other places i should look for rust were it might form if i happen to be missing it. It has a 400ci v8 with a C-6 tranny in it already that was taken out of a mid 70's model galaxy. Also the front suspension had been swapped from a solid beam front suspension to a IFS system with disc brakes out of a 70's model galaxy. Do yall think that was a good switch for the front suspension. Overall the truck seems to be in good condition but i just wanted soom advice on trouble spots i should look for in it. Also i wanted to modernize the truck in some ways like taking the fuel tank out of the cab and putting it under the bed and maybe putting fuel injection on it. I just wanted to make it a better daily driver all around so if you guys have any tips on doing these things im open to suggestions.
weaversean85, Welcome to the 61-66 forum, we are the nations truckstop for tech support.
I would like to offer a personal opinion for an upgrade, if you have no towing plans or lite towing. Unless your truck is a 4X4 it didn't come with a solid front axle but rather the I-beams. While the 400 can be made to be snappy but was a gas hog in the trucks, and didn't last long.
I think I would look for a mid-late 70s with a 302 and tranny that you like. My preference is an automatic. I say darn a full grown Ford truck that can't change it's own gears. You cab & front clip would be a direct bolt up, and the gas tank is under the chassis. You will have to modify your bed bolt up but that is on the dumb end of the truck, You will also have to add a filler to the bed and patch the filler hole in the cab. The cab tank doesn't bother me enough to want to move it. Again this is one posters opinion and I'm sure that others will chime in too.
Good luck and Welcome aboard, don't become a stranger.
