New to the forum and powerstrokes need some help. Been having trouble starting the last couple days has cooled off some but still in the 50's cranks long time with lots of white smoke. I have been searching this forum and found lots of good advise. I checked the glow plugs only one shows bad. The relay is working fine and the oil res. is full. Where do I go from here? Thanks.
Used a multimeter to check glow plug resistance on wire harness terminals 1,5. Then set meter to DC volts black to ground red to relay post turn ignition to on voltage present for about 45 seconds.
When you checked the GP's did you pull the valve cover or test at the pins the plug in to the valve cover? Did you look at the female side of all the pins to ensure that none of them are burnt? Also two bad plugs would IMO cause a hard start if the temps were cool, I am assuming that 1-2 minutes the white smoke is nearly gone?
This is probably a dumb question but which post did you check on the relay? The 1 large post should always be hot,the 2nd large post should be hot for approx. the time you mentioned. It really sounds like a relay gone bad or a bad connection between the relay and glowplugs
Checked the GP at the valve cover harness. Have not removed the valve covers I will pull them next and inspect all the wires. And yes I checked both relay post one is hot all the time the other for about 45 seconds.
When you pull the plugs on the valve covers look into the plug with a light for any sign of burning as it is common. Replace the GP's and then see how it does
Also when you pull the valve covers, check the glow plug itself on the two pistons identified bad, if the GPs are good the wiring under the valve cover could be bad, causing an open indication on your test
Another way to test the GPR is to short out the 2 big posts with a screw driver for ~45-60 seconds. If it starts better the GPR may be bad.
BTW: I've seen GPR's that show voltage on both big terminals but the amps weren't getting through, meaning the relay is probably shorting internally and getting really hot.
