Is it safe to shim the spring, do the 10Kohm resistor mod and clean the screen without a pyrometer or boost pressure gage on my BLUE'96 F350? Also a friend of a friend was thinking about making up a straight pipe to put in place of his CATCON to test his BLUE'96 F350. I don't know how long 'the test' will last. Does this have an effect on boost or EGT? Or should I...er um...he wait till after putting gages in?
The 10k is just like a mild chip setting. If you dont do any heavy towing you should be fine with it. The shim and cleaning the screen wont affect egts at all. Thats a good idea to gut the cat because its the only restriction in the exhaust, the muffler is a straight through design. You can just knock out the insides and reinstall the dummy cat or put a 3.5" diameter pipe in its place. You might see a slightly higher boost without the cat but nothing to brag about.
Great! Time to get out a couple wrenches then. I do tow a boat trailer once in a blue moon downhill bothways. I'll plan on doing a good service on the filter and FPR soon. I think it would be wise to swap out some pipe for the cat - that way it can go back in if need arises
Most exhaust shops around here do not carry anything over 3" unless you special order it, but if they have the right size pipe they can make one for you.
I think I found a rusty piece about 8 foot long behind a local machine shop. I'm gonna see if he'll give it to me. If it works out I'll have extra to share. then I just need to find some of those flare doohickies to weld it to.

so if i found someplace with 3.5" pipe (that's off the down pipe, right?) they should be able to bend/flare me up something for a homemade side exit in front of the rear wheel?

You get the right exhaust shop and they will, I have one hear, they work for cash on straight pipe jobs, and you can't see the counter under all the papers and grease and parts....you get the idea.
FYI- dont tell your exhaust shop that your making muff/cat delete pipes other wise they wont build it(I cant say that all shops wont build the delete if they know what they're for but most wont) Good luck and enjoy the new pipes!
