I have replaced the front and rear brake pads and rotors. Also, put in new caliper kits to replace the stainless steel slides. My brake peddle is real soft. I have used a vaccume bleeder at all wheels. With the engine off the peddle will pump up firm, but the minute I start the engine the peddle is soft again. How do you bleed the master cylinder on a 1997 F250 4wd with rear ABS? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
go to the back right side brake (furthest from the master cyl). loosen the bleeder, put it back finger tight. pump pu the brake pedal 10 times (motor on) , hold the brake pedal dwon, have budy crack the bleeder and drain out the air and bubbles. do this 5-6 times to flush all the air out of the line from the master cyl to the back end. after each 3-4 times, refill the cylinder with brake fluid, dont let it get down and such in more air.------ do the same thing to the front passenger side. in the end, try the pedal. if it still has some spunge, then do the driver side and should only take a couple cycles on the driver side front and rear since the main line has already been purged.
So is there any special procedure to bleed with the ABS system? From the above post it looks like a normal bleed except you have to have the engine running?
You have to activate the ABS pump. You can do that either with a compatible scanner... or go find a gravel road, and lock'em up! The bleed the system normally.
I did not have two people so I had to use a vacumn bleeder. I started the truck engine and started at the right rear and proceeded to the right front. The system still had air so I continued to bleed the right rear. The fluid which was coming out of the right rear was very very dirty. I continued bleeding until clean fluid was coming through the system (one large bottle of new brake fluid). The brakes seem to be okay now. I guess my problem started because I thought I could gravity bleed the system by opening the bleed valves and letting fluid drain into a cup but I guess air will still get into the system. Anyway, thanks to all the folks that responded. Tom Davis
