Dent/bumpside parts compatibility range?
Dent/bumpside parts compatibility range?
I've spotted a few DOA F100/150s at local "Ditchside Dealerships" and was wondering about what year the lack of compatible parts for the bumpsides diminished to the point of not being worth fighting the wasps and snakes for it. I know that engines and trannys are always usable but what about suspension, brakes, grilles and such? Thanks.

The windshields will interchange from 67-79.I recently learned the inner fenders from the 73-79's will fit the 67-72's with some minor work. The rad support will also work. The in cab gas tanks also interchange. Some of the rears will bolt in others will go but require moving the spring perches. Most of the driveline on the F250 highboys will also interchange. If you are looking to update a 67-72 4X2 to power disc brakes you can use the 73-79 stuff. There is a good article on this swap at the start of this forum.Oh yeah, some of the steering boxes will work too.Hope this helps.
You would have to measure the wheelbases of both trucks. The body mounts on the rad support and the front cab mounts would line up but you would have to move the crossmember that supports the rear cab mounts forward. If the wheelbases match then it would be a matter of redrilling the bolt holes for the bed.If they don't match then about the only practical option would be a flatbed. Hope this helps.
Yes the frame is wider on the 73 up F100, 150, 250 4X2 and F100,150 4X4. The F250 4X4 used the narrower 34" frame until the end of the 76 model run.77-79 F250 4X4 used the wider frame like the 4X2's. I suggest caution on the 77 F250 4X4's as I've seen a couple with a 77 build date and a narrow frame.Hope this helps.

Redcat: that's pretty complete info!
Not sure of the build date but the "highboy" (badly abused name) was up to mid 77 model year with narrow frame and leafs. The "lowboy had wide rear frame with 3" wide leafs, and most had the aft axle tank. I have NEVER seen in cab tank in a lowboy.
The 67-72 crewcab "highboys" had a 149" wheelbase, and the 73-mid77 "highboys " had a 150" wheelbase. The 77-79s were 150" also.
nitewing: Where is your cab damaged? the crewcabs were cut off with cutting torch, and modified centre piece, and welded back together.
Take a look at the floorboards. the front of cab is identical, and rear of cab identical to a 2dr 67-72 cab. If the centre of your cab is ok, find a good bodyman and it can be done. Yes I am serious.
Please don't give up on your 72.

68Mercury250Ranger, Before I got married in '92 I was constantly into the 67-72 and 73-79 trucks.Had a couple friends doing the same thing.Lack of cash and the now ex wifes permission led to selling my 79 F350 4X4 and some (but not all) of my parts stash.Got divorced in '03 and after a few years of paying off bills I decided to go back to the old Fords. After I found this site I started to remember a lot of info that was stashed in the back of my head and realized that I could help others and learn more at the same time.So I joined.
On the gas tank info on your last post: I've never seen a factory in cab tank in a low boy either but I installed them in two of my trucks.
