I have a 1993 E150 with the 5.0. Since I bought this van a month ago i have been replacing parts. When i got the van it had airbag codes. I disconnected the battery to fix the airbag and now i am getting engine codes. I have done a complete tune up and replaced the coolant temp sensor and the air intake controler. Now I am getting the 173 code (heated oxygen sensor indicates rich condition, right side), is it the o2 sensors, or something else that I am missing. Also i am getting a strong smell of gas next to the van.
I need the van to get inspected and for my wife to use and it will fail emissions test the way it is. Thanks
Just a wild guess. Perhaps an injector on the right side is sticking, leaving it slightly open, making for a rich condition. Have you inspected your spark plugs to see if they're all a good dry uniform color? Have you run any fuel injector conditioner, like the ever popular Texron, as part of your tune ups?

Any idea how old the O2 sensor is? The book probably says to replace at 50K.
You should be able to sniff out the source of the "strong smell of gas". Could be something like a leaking fuel pressure regulator sucking gas in through the vacuum line.
I do not know when the o2 sensor was changed last or if ever. The plugs looked good when i took them out to do the tune up. I also ran injector cleaner in it. I was thinking that when is was working on the airbag, I had to keep turning the key to check the system while i was trouble shooting. And the charcoal filter for the fuel purge system is filled with gas. I will have to check that. I might just replace the o2 sensors anyway. I just spent more money on the airbag system than I wanted and was hoping to not to replace the o2 sensors at over $70 a pop for each.
