Hi everyone, sorry for not being active for a while. Been busy. Someone suggested to me that it is my Mass Airflow Valve. Assuming it is my MAV. where is it on the engine? Is it easy to do? How much will it cost? Because i live in the UK can someone put me onto a American dealer who exports. Cheers. Mikey B
I have no idea what a mass airflow valve is. There's a mass air flow meter, but unless your truck is a 95 or a 96 (and things may be far different for you being overseas) it doesn't have one.
So first things first - tell us something about the truck. Year, engine, transmission, mileage, history, etc. would be a great place to start.
Thanks for your interest Andy. The truck is a 1996 ford F150, 4.6 triton v8. I've owned it for 3 yrs and treated it well. However, the previous owner maybe used it hard. The truck mileometer says 65,000 but numbers dont line up so it has been clocked. The torque converter is worn out and needs replacing, I've been told they last for 300,000 miles so that gives us a rough idea of the mileage. Hope this info is enough for you to go on. Cheers Mikey.
Here in the states the 4.6L wasn't available until 1997 when the F-150 was completely redesigned. So if you have a 96 with a 4.6L then things are done very differently over there and this is in the wrong forum. You can use the red triangle with the exclamation point in the corner of a post to ask a moderator to move it if that's the case.
Thanks Andy, Your reply has cleared up a question of the year of manufacture. My truck is a left hand drive, imported from Kansas. We know very little about these trucks here and guessed the year at 1996 using the vin. I dont know if it is wize to post my vin on the 'FTE' or not, maybe you would know the year if I did?
A bit more about the truck.- "Now asume 1997" Ford F150 XLT EFI. 3 door crew cab, step side, 4.6 triton v8 eng. Assembled in the Kansas city assembly plant. I,ve trawled the FTE on previous threads today to get more info on the question of MAF or not. I cant find one on my truck. To explain the symptom in more depth. The truck starts and runs fine for several days and I begin to think there is no fault. Then for several days it starts ok but stalls at every road junction when I slow down. I know when it is about to stall, because the engine rpm becomes erratic and a touch of throttle can sometimes keep it going. I hope all this helps, thanks for your time. Mikey

Reason: Forgot to mention EFI.
Posting the VIN is fine. It doesn't expose you to any risk. Since it's visible through the windshield to anyone who walks by the truck, it shouldn't pose a problem. There are also VIN decoders online. If you enter your VIN it will tell you the year.
As for the problems, I know very little about the modular engines.
Thanks Andy, you've been a great help anyway. There seems to be a problem with my VIN because the site don't recognise the number. What I'm going to do now is post a new thread in the correct category, see what happens. Cheers Andy. Mikey.
Hey Mikey, what is the number or letter in the 10th digit of your VIN? This is the model year designation digit. A 1996 model will be a "T" and a 1997 model will be a "V".
Sounds like your problem is not in the MAF but in the IAC valve instead. The IAC is the Idle Air Control valve and it can effect the engine at idle. Its job is to control air into the engine at idle since the throttle plate is closed. Good luck!
John, thanks for that. My 10th leter is a V, which makes my truck a 1997 model. So let me get this right. Do I have a MAF, because I cant find one? If I don't, my cutting out problem is my IAC. Is that correct? Mikey.
The IAC is most likely your problem. Look for a metal piece held on with two small bolts and an electrical connector near the air inlet of the intake manifold. I don't recall this specific engine, but it's either going to be right in front of you, or buried just behind the air inlet under the windshield cowl.
The Mass Air Flow Sensor is mounted in the plastic housing up near the air filter, but won't be causing the symptoms you're experiencing.
You may be able to clean the carbon out of the Idle Air Control and reinstall it to get some more life out of it, but a lot of people like to just install a new one.
Thanks! The truck is away at the minute, having the torque converter changed. The minute I get it back I'll have a go at locating both the IAC and the MAF. I'll post next week to let you know how I got on. Cheers. Mikey
