Today I started to get a high pitched whistle from either the power steering pump or the a/c compressor. The noise doesn't sound like when the power steering pump is low in fluid its higher pitched than that and isn't constant. My truck is a '98 f150 2wd with a 4.2 liter v6. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Could be the idler pulley or tensioner pulley. Remove the belt and see if the noise goes away. If so, turn some pulleys by hand as see if any squeak or feel rough when turning.
Does it make noise when you turn off the A/C or move the steering wheel? I know that on my 97 Explorer the IAC went bad and was making a loud squalling noise. $40 and good as new.
My explorer would get really loud when at an idle because there was no ir being forced into the intake. I still think that could be a problem. Take the IAC off and clean it with throttle body cleaner. It is simple and is only held on with 2 10mm bolts and an electrical conncetion. It cant hurt just dont tough anything on the inside of the IAC with anything. It could mess it up
One easy way to tell if its your belt is if it is squeeking at idle leave the truck running take a bar of soap and touch it to the belt for a few seconds so that the whole belt gets coated. If the squeek goes away you found your problem

Its not electrical is it? Have you added any new electrical toys to the cab that may have some interference in the radio system? Hey just wanted to throw somethin different out there.
Good Luck
