Ive been tossing around what I want to do for a exhaust on my '74 F100 with a 360 since i got it last year. I know the basic components i want, being headers, 2.5" exhaust, factory exit location, the standard dual setup stuff. However, I decided i want to incorporate a x pipe and loud agressive mufflers into it, and well thats all well and good and everything but i recently discovered dynomax makes a double in/double out muffler that has a x pipe built into it, and i figured that would make putting my system in easier. So i need opinions. if anybody has experience with these types of muffler/xpipe combo deals, let me know- and always if you got clips post 'em.
Where in the system are you mounting the muffler? The X pipe is supposed to increase torque, from my understanding, and the closer to the manifolds it is, the better it works. Putting a crossover pipe in the system as close to the headers as possible will do the same thing, maybe not quite as efficiently.
I can speak for the 2-in 2-out muffler, I have an edelbrock on my '97 351 that sounds great, and seemed to help let it breath a lot better-of course I put headers on it too. The single muffler makes for easier routing and saves space too!
I too have a 74' F-100 with 302ci an I have Dual 2 1/2" straight out the back with glasspacks and no crossover pipe w/ dynomax headers.
I know what muffler you mean. I think however it may be best to skip the flo-x muffler because a crossover pipe usually is placed towards the front of the truck with the mufflers right in front of the rear axle. (I believe that placement is best) What you could do is just run pipes straight out the back and just put in a straight section of pipe between the two pipes towards the front of the truck. (Like the Mustangs exhaust & x-pipe set-up)
If you want loud aggressive muffler look at the dynomax race bullets or a shorter glasspack. I love the sound of glasspacks on my truck and IMO for the money you can't beat them.
I was going to put the muffler as close to the front of the bed as i could fit it. I wanted to avoid putting mufflers under the cab because i didnt really want all the interior resonance that that can result in. Really the only reason i was going to do the x flow muffler was just to simplify the process, but now i think ill just go with the orginal plan of the x pipe and glasspacks. It will actually be cheaper to get a x pipe and 2 glasspacks rather than the one dynomax, and i doubt getting the other pipes fab'ed will cost more. Ill post a before/after when i get it in summer. Thanks for the feedback!
The mufflers on my 74' are right at the gap between the bed and the cab. If your going straight out the back I don't think you'll have to worry about resonace. Mine has a little drone between 1600-1800 rpm under load but it is barely noticable.
