I have a 2002 EB 4x4 with the 5.4L engine with approximately 45K miles. I bought it used with 28K miles. I've changed the oil every 3K miles since I've had it and use motorcraft 5W-20 oil. I put 6 quarts in and check weekly between changes. After about 1500 miles, it begins to drop on the dipstick. I usually have to add a quart between 2000 and 2500 miles. I think this is excessive for a vehicle with this few miles. It does not smoke or leak. The engine is spotless. The car seems to run great and I can put a quart of oil in occasionally rather than a new car payment. I just wonder if anyone else has noticed this oil consumption, if it's normal, or if anyone has suggestions as what to do to correct. Thanks.
Apparently these motors just use oil. Both my 98 Expy and my dads E250 use oil between changes. His has 175k and uses almost a quart every 1500, and mine has 54k and uses half a quart every 5k. There is a thread about the oil consumption of these motors in the 5.4/4.6 forums.
I have a 99 5.4 and it uses a quart about every 4,000 mi. I use 5w 30 castrol Syntec in it and do in many other cars with no adding in between changes. My expy has 54,000 mi on it and I change oil every 5,000 mi. I think as stated earlier these engines do use some oil and this is some thing I am not use to.
yeap, about 1 qt every 6k.. I use Mobil1 5-20 but im planning on changing to 5.30.. what do you guys think? heat in texas gets above 100 degrees in the summer.
any suggestions?
We will get at or above a hundred here in Nebraska maybe not for as long as people in Texas, but 5W-30 seems to work fine here. I also use it in all of our cars and it seems to work fine.
I got a 2002 xlt expy about 1 year ago with high mileage (82000) but was in exceptional shape. The entire time I used 5w20, after about 2k following an oil/filter change, I'd be a 1/2 qt low, and b4 5-6k, I'd need to add a qt. Then I got "gutsy" on my last change, what with warmer weather coming and all, and used 10w30 castrol high milaeage. I am now due for an oil/filter change (nearing 5k) and I lost maybe 1/8 qt or less, leaving the level still in the normal range hash mark on the dip stick. BUT-after reading a post in another thread on this board, that a Ford engineer stated that the thinner oil circulated better in the upper part of the engine (sorry, can't remember the specifics) I'm getting cold feet and thinking of backing off to at least 5w30. The engineer stated that it was found to be better to get thinner oil throughout the engine than 2 have thicker oil and a circulation issue. What happened to the days of 10w30 in winter, 10w40 in summer??
