I know I've complained about oil consumption before on my 12' 5.0 with 42 K. I've kinda come to terms with it and figure not much I can do ? Next oil change I want to try to improve it. Checked it the other day and has used approx 3/4 of quart in 2200 K. I've read other guys post on this forum talk about improving consumption by switching brands and trying different viscosity. I'm using the recommended Ford 5/20 synthetic now. Any ideas guys ??
FWIW, I use Royal Purple or Mobile One (this last time because I was far from home), both full synthetic. The truck uses absolutely NO oil. It is on the exact same X on the dipstick every time I check. I have 39,8XX miles. I feel like I lucked out too. I've never had a vehicle not use some.
I think that the high end full synthetics, such as Royal Purple, Mobil1, and Amsoil, are your best bet for maintaining a full crankcase. I don't have a 5.0, so I can't vouch for any of them in this situation, but I've had sucess in other engine cutting down usage.
