Buy some that fit a Super Duty from 99-04. They will fit with a little grinding to the bushings, and they will ride better than anything you will buy for a 73-79 truck.
Not to mention, you can find them at any off-road shop, and they will be in stock. Try to find a set of springs for a 73-79 truck that won't take you a week or two to get.
If you use 99 and up you will also have to move the centerbolt hole.
Good point, I see the Super Duty springs getting alot of praise on here latley for swappability into 77.5-79 250-350's. And the way people tell it I think gives some the understanding that they'll bolt right in. Yeah drilling a hole isn't that hard, but getting it in the right location and drilling through (very hard) spring steel takes some planning and skill.
You want it to ride like a Caddy go get an Escalade, we're talking about a 70's 3/4 ton truck that's built like an anvil. When I decide to get my 6" lift springs for the front of my 79 250 I'm just gonna buy the ones that are made for it, slap them in and be done.
I just don't see the extra effort being worth what's probably a marginally better ride. My 2 cents
Guys the front springs do bolt right in. I run a set on my 75, and just installed a set in a new 74 project. The alignment pin is centered between the spring eyes, and a new hole does not have to be drilled. Drilling a spring is not a good idea anyway. a crack will develop after the spring cycles a bit, and eventually fail. When guys try to use the SD rear springs, there are hanger differences and relocating the hangers is required. For 73 - 77 trucks, the rear hangers need to be changed out completely because the SD rear springs are 3" and the hangers for the 73-77 are 2.5 inches. The 77.5-79 are 3".
And as for marginal ride, you may never know. You will just have to find one with this upgrade, and see. It is more than marginally better. I have had some springs custom made, and they ride, and flex well. Better than any over the counter spring. For the ease, availability and convenience of the SD spring, it is the best bang for the buck.
i put a 4" skyjacker suspension system ( new springs in all four corners )under my truck ( 78 f-250 ) nearly 9 years ago and have no complaints at all. it rides a hundred percent better than stock and anyone whos rode in it can't believe how it rides....just my 2cents...
The drop under the cab is slightly greater from the early years than the trucks made after 77.5. That is part of the old highboy / lowboy thing.
As an example of clearance, I run a 6" BDS spring from an 02 F-250 SD. (gas), and I run 39.5 inch Boggers. I had to lift it a little more, so I also used a set of 2.5 inch hangers for the SD as well. I have been working on suspension flex, and now at full flex it rubs the fenders again. I have found a set of 8" springs for $200.00 and will be installing them this week. It is difficullt to say exactly how much lift you will obtain, but I have installed 4" SD springs on 79' and cleared 36 inch rubber without rubbing.
Any 99 to 04 front spring will work. Diesel springs will be too stiff, and gas springs work well, but springs for a 5.4 equiped truck ride the best. Some manufacturers use the same spring for both gas engines.
Check you local craigs list or with your local off road shop, and look at bulliten boards. Many SD guys that are wanting a bigger lift have nothing to do with their old stuff and these springs are like gold for us older blue oval guys. This means the used springs can be purchased for next to nothing.
