Empty, hubs locked and -25*F almost didn't make 10mpg with the added idle time. Worst tank of gas of the winter. Normally at 12.5mpg or better consistantly.
Gas isn't the same everywhere. Took a trip out to North Dakota. Gas in the Fargo-Moorehead area sucked. Made 5 mpg less than the gas here at home. Fuel up in Grand Forks and it was only 1mpg less than home

I've heard about that cutting a hole in front of the air box. Don' they call it zoodad or doodad mod? Something like that. I see that armynavyguy did it. Has anyone else done this mod with any success? Is there any pics of this mod and what has been done as far as stopping dirt or water from coming in? I may try a few of these "cheap" modifications and see what the outcome is.
I'm still not sure of keeping the beast or not. It will truly drain my wallett down in Cali. I'm either going to make my wifes Jeep grand cherokee my vehicle, and get her a $ 14,000 minivan, or I am going to look for a little 4x4 pickup. If you can still gain 5 to 6 mpg more than what I am getting now, that is a considerable difference in the long run. But I'm trying to understand why some of you don't think that?
As far as down-sizing to a smaller truck, I think it will do what I need it to. Especially since I have sold all my big toys. So I no longer have any heavy items to tow. I didn't want to get rid of them but when you are on a military budget and you have mouths to feed you have to make sacrifices. Just like I may have to sacrifice my 10.
Don,
To tell you the truth I don't need the V-10. Hell, I don't need a 3/4 ton. I'm sure a ford ranger supercab would probably fullfill my need of hunting, fishing and camping. But I WANTED (this would be in bold letters, underlined and in Italics) a Superduty. When I was in the Navy I did security in Puerto Rico.l There was a Island 8 miles off the coast called Veiques that we would have to go to and pull security when Destriyers and aircraft wanted to shoot there weapons. Our patrol vehicles were 1 ton, crew cab, long bed Superduty's with the Triton V-8. Now all we had to drive on were dirt roads. Some of these trucks had over 80,000 miles of straight off road driving. And you know that since the Navy paid for them, I drove them like they were stolen. And we never had a problem (except for one time when my buddy passed out in the passenger seat during night patrol, I threw on some NVGs, turned out the lights and hauled *** down the road, forgot about a turn and slammed on the brakes with the tires cranked. Still, nothing serious happened). Sorry for the long story. I just wanted to point out that Superduty's are the epitome of what a truck should be. I think you should keep it.

Well let's see...
10 mpg @ 3.00 a gallon = .30 a mile
16 mpg @ 3.00 a gallon = .19 a mile
Difference? .11 a mile.
Drive 15,000 a year? Save $1650 a year or $137.5 a month. Now, how much MORE, if any, will you pay per month to save that $137.5 dollars each month?
More meaning, if you get rid of the truck (paid off??) and buy a $14,000 van. See, the van's payments are gonna be in the $270 range, plus you still gotta fill at .19 a mile.
However, work it so that the math works the OTHER way. Listen it's all about the math. It's not always necessarily the MPG. There are other factors.
IMHO, I think you should get rid of the truck if it is not paid off and go find something small & cheap to commute to base/post with. Tell you what though...I'd sell it in Alaska. You may end up dying with that V10 in the land of fruits and nuts.
Couple of Q's?
Got kids? #?
Truck paid off? No? What's the monthly on it?
What's your rank? What branch?
To answer your questions; I have 2 kids, no the truck is not paid off, $310 a month, E-5, U.S. Air Force. Your right about selling it up here. This truck won't be worth anymore than it is now. If I sell it, my plan was to do it here. My truck is a hot commidity here. If I do sell it, I can't figure out what to buy. I have never owned a foreign truck. So, I'm a little hesitant to jump on board and leave the domestic trucks behind. I really wish Ford would make a 4 door ranger. What's your thoughts?
dang it man.don't loose what almost can't be gotten any more your v10.
add on's forget them all of them on my old 05 we tried almost every thing made and got nothin back to help mpg's more then a raw egg under the go fast just as fred has always stated.
now i have a 07 v10 sc dualie parked back home and waiting for me. that gets the same mpg's my sc srw got but rides much better. man the best grab is loose the lead in your foot.
now for around town driving, i have sitting a very nice 07 mustang v6 ponie car model thats force feed and gets 23 mpg's when i loose the lead foot problem i have.
and thanks for your service from a old e7 retired .
Unfortunately I may have to retire my V10 because of where we are moving. California is not a place known for cheap gas or for anything else for that matter. No pun intended for you Cali readers. I don't have a choice of where we are going because the military dictates that. But we will be driving a lot more than we do now just to get anywhere. This is why I asked the question about squezeing more MPG out the V10. At this point I don't think it will be a practical daily driver. Looks like I will be downsizing. I've never owned a foreign truck before, and the thought of doing it scares me. But I'm looking at what will still suit my needs, and give the MPG I'm looking for. Thanks for the replys guys.

I really need to clear something up right now! This putting the egg and lead foot crap does not apply in my case. My daily commute consists of driving to base on the highway doing 65 to 70mph. Our State Troopers enforce the speed limits here like you wouldn't believe. Once I get to base, the speed limits are 25 to 35mph. When my duty day is over it's back home. The truck will sit over the weekend 95% of the time. And still I have to fill up once a week. So, I don't have a chance to be speed demon. Heck, half the guys I work with say I drive like grandpa. And I tell them it's because I have a gas guzzler!
MARTYSTOWRIG, this vehicle is practical up here, and the way of life here. My truck will go on road trips but only during camping, and hunting trips. There are lots of V10's up here, but there are many more diesels. I couldn't afford to buy a diesel in my price range, and that's why I opted for the V10.
I've thought of those explorer sport tracs, but dang they are ugly!
Hey guys I have an update. I retired the V10. I found a screaming deal on a 7.3 PSD. I couldn't pass it up when my monthly payments only changed a wopping $3 and my insurance went down. The new truck has been better on gas 10 fold. I'm still on the same tank of gas that I bought 2 weeks ago. I would've had to fill up twice already if I still had the old 10. Sorry to dissapoint you guys!

Wow! 100mpg?
Question, The V10 had an 18 gal tank and the 7.3 has a 38 gal tank?
