Fuel Pump Leaking Oil ??
ok guys, I have posted some questions under another thread about an oil leak I have on my truck leaking oil in the valley. It may be next week before I can really work on it, but I am trying to gather info now.
I was searching this forum and read where someone posted that when the fuel pump starts going out it will leak engine oil? Is this true? and can someone elaborate on where it leaks the oil from?
thanks for your input

Ooops...sorry, I thought it was in my sig
1997 F-350 108K AT
well maintained miles, very clean and well lubricated fuel. (99% of fuel is from bulk tank at home with 3 in line filters, all water block, and Hydrotex Lubricity added to fuel)
Generally I don't see pump / injector problems associated with wear from contaminated / dirty abrasive fuel in my other diesel engines
But, since I am considering pulling the turbo to replace the pedastal o-rings, thought I might consider replacing the fuel pump while I am in there.
I work on quite a few engines and tranny's, but not the PS, all of the comments I have read about dropping the plunger rod into the engine has me kinda gun shy.
On another note, I have got to get under this thing to see why in the world you have to pull the engine to drop the oil pan, as I have read on here. I have never seen nor heard of a truck engine installed / designed this way??
Thanks for input

This should be posted in the other psd forum cookie will probably move this when he reads it but to answer your question .When the pump goes bad it will leak fuel not oil , or lose fuel pressure some times the fuel lines get hard and crack and leak there. As far as losing the pushrod just remove all the lines and the bolts then turn the engine over by hand and watch the pump it will lift up as the pushrod comes up with the eccentric on the cam take it slow it should push it out of the block . Pull the pump straight up slowly and try to get a finger on the pushrod with the cam up you shouldn't have to worry about losing the pushrod but still becareful.

Directly in front of the fuel pump, there is another pump, this one a high pressure oil pump. It takes normal engine oil and pressurizes it to 500-3000 psi to be the mechanical force to fire the injectors. This can leak over time, however most commonly the outlet lines leak oil at the connection to the pump. The lines are on the driver's side of the engine, and the back of the pump is a large circle.

when the fuel pump starts going out it will leak fuel. sometimes the o-ring that seals the outside of the pump tot he block will leak oil but there is very little oil there. so if it is oil and not fuel it likely the HPOP that Strokin_it talked about. best thing to do is get a few cans of break cleaner and hose that whole area down then wipe or blow it dry then see if you can see where the fluid is coming from.
