Unhappy Manual Trans and T-Case Fluid Question

Hello All, <O</O
I recently acquired my first truck;<O</O
1989 F350 4X4 7.3 Diesel 5 Speed Manual, Crew Cab with 106K actual miles.<O</O
<O</O

The PO had to replace the engine 4K ago (in 2006) due to cavitation issues. Obviously this truck hasn't been driven very much, but it also seems that the PO either did his own maintenance or had it done by someone not experienced with diesels (hence the cavitation issue).

<O</OI decided to drain all the fluids and replace with new. I have done all of it without issue until the Trans and T-Case. I pulled the plug on the T-case and brown oil comes out, same on the trans. I assume that since ATF is red and not brown, that it is lightweight gear oil. So the question is, what now? Can I just fill it with ATF? Do I need to clean them somehow to get the gear oil out?

<O</OThe T-Case leaks, so I am going to get a seal kit and reseal it, but I would rather not have to drop the trans.

<O</OThanks in advance for the help.

<O</OJon

<O</OP.S. Unrelated, has anyone put rear speakers in a Crew cab rear door or pillar, even though it is a Lariat, it only has front speakers stock, would like to change that.<O</O<O</O

I would fill it up with ATF then wait a week or so and do it again. That should clean 99% of the old fluid out and keep your tranny and case happy.

I would bet it probably was ATF, just old with lots of miles on it. Put some fresh ATF in and change it again if you wish. I try to change mine about every 10K.

OK,
Thanks for the quick reply. I was concerned that there could be damage done, but it sound like if it was gear oil, just clean it with atf. And that it may have just been OLD atf and then its no big deal.
