I am really glad to hear that your are getting somewhere with this. Mine (touch wood) has not been acting up lately. The overall number of occurences seems to have gone down after I disconnected my EGR and deleted my cat and muffler. This may only be coincidence though.

You made a comment about your climate control center going dead occasionally. Mine does that too; normally right on start up. what I've been doing to fix it is: Pop out the radio; unplug the climate control unit for a couple of minutes; plug it back in and it's usually fine for another few thousand miles Is there a better solution for this problem?

Thanks a lot for your continuing updates; I really appreciate the benefits of your experiences.

I hope I am getting somewhere with it. I guess only time will tell!

I'll talk to the tech tomorrow when I pick it up to find out what led to him replacing the injector pressure regulator. When we experienced the episode last week he initially thought icp sensor and (some) valve. I'll ask what detered him.

I've read on this site and others that when people notice this, they turn the key off, turn on the headlights, turn off the headlights, and then turn on the ignition. It hasn't happened to me in a month or so and only seems to do it on warmer heat soak days. It has never happened in the winter/cold.

Dealer wants +$500 to swap out a new head unit, but I passed. I've read where people have had that done and not clear up the issue. I'll need something solid that tells me that we're just not part swapping in hopes we get it...especially when it's on my dime. Also, I really have bigger fish to fry right now, like getting the engine running correctly and consistantly, before I start worrying about 'creature comforts.'

No problem! That's what is great about these sites! If one person can benefit from my experiences, it makes the time posting worth it. Plus, I have benefited from reading others posts!

Take care!

04Xcursion,
Sorry to take over your thread, but since you are interested...

Picked up the Excursion today, but they didn't have the paperwork ready so I'll get it in a few days.

Nothing new to really report other than a confirmed injector pressure regulator change. The tech stated no codes again and discussion with Ford led to IPR replacement rather than icp. Sounds like they'll be typing a lot of stuff into the service record so I'll post back when I get the more detailed info.

I'm not sure there's a high confidence level that it's fixed. It shows no codes and happens so sporadically that we might be chasing it until it really shows itself. Oh well...we'll drive it and see.

You haven't hijacked this thread at all.... I'm just lucky enough to have found someone with a problem which is similar (although far more intrusive) to mine.

I am really hoping you get yours solved. The information far to valuable to me to just let pass by.

I'm curious to know if Ford has a method to prove whether or not your IPR was bad or if they're still just guessing. If they do I'd like to know what it is.

Something I just thought of which may or may not be relevant:

Have you ever had your fuel system checked for aeration? I have in the past seen other diesels (CAT 3508s and Detriot Series 60s) run very poorly due to aerated fuel. This condition was usually caused by faulty plumbing close to the transfer pump which allowed fuel to be "frothed" as it was being delivered to the engine. It was also very hard on transfer pumps due to decreased lubrication within the pumps as a result of the air in the fuel.

I know you've had fuel pump problems and I wonder if this may be related... Something to think on anyways.

As alway good luck and please let me know what Ford had to say.

OK. Here's the latest.

Again, no codes. "All diagnostics steps were within specs. Monitored IDS PIDS for ICP, and IPR. PIDS looked ok. Emailed Ford Hotline, they also advised that ICP or IPR would most likely be the cause of the idle concern. R&R IPR valve. Reassembled. Road test, engine seems to run fine at this time."

~ 1 week later...reoccurance. Has happened again since. We are going to throw the 'flight data recorder' on it to try to capture the actual event. Otherwise the dealer is taking educated guesses at what it is since it's not throwing codes or not doing it while hooked up to the computer.

Stay tuned!

Well I am no further either. The mechanic thought mine was a 7.3 so the valve cover gasket isnt the problem.I ordered a egr cooler removal kit and will get rid of the cooler .I hope that solves the problem.I wish you luck tryin to get the computer to tell a tale.I had no such luck when hooked up the idle stumbled but there were no signs why. That is part of the reason I am loosing the cooler maybe it is the cooler misting enough to foul combustion.

Have the techs checked for faulty HPO check valves, as this will also cause this problem. Both the IPR and faulty HPO check valves cause the same symptoms.

Here is a link to a TSB that may help

Good Luck
