converting a 89 ford with 300 back to a good ol carb.
put a old intake on it. bolted up tight.
got a new carb on it. all so had to change the eletric fuel pump to a diferent one. put fuel reg between the pump and carb.
problem is that it will start and run at an idle (a rough idle). but when you give it a little bit of throttle it will die. is this caused by the computer trying to compinsate. do i have to put an old distributor on it.
reason for this change is that this is a ranch truck. and had a lot of trouble with the electronic stuff.
any help on this would be greatfull.

If you change the fuel system, the ignition has to be changed as well. In fact all of the electronics will be disabled or removed. The emissions system will probably not work correctly. Check your local regulations if this isn't a farm truck only.

Go to the junkyard and grab the distributor and engine harness out of an early 80's truck, make sure it has the blue strain Duraspark module, and a non-feedback carb, an 82 definatley has the setup you want. You may have to do some wiring to hook it up, but, if you have a good manual, you'll be able to figure it out. Or, there are quite a few pages about swapping it into older vehicles that will give you a very good idea how to wire it.

It's always easier to go back, than going forward. Gotta find the old dura fart box and distributer. No feedback carb. Loose the computer. And at that matter take all the emission stuff of. Soon it will be a charm to tune, couple of vacuum hoses, but a gross polluter too. And who knows about the tranny?

Don't believe that stuff about being a gross poluter. With an old style carb and ignition, and tuned for efficiency and good performance, you'll not be bad. I got a 79 jeep that has no emmission stuff on it except for cats and it passes the sniffer test and the dyno emissions check we have here. My 86 Bronco 300 now has a points dist (soon to be DuraSpark) with an old-style mechanical one barrel carb and one cat. It also passes the emisions tests. And no more egr and air pump stuff either (it don't make no sense to put exhaust into the intake and fresh air into the exhaust).
I just ran the ignition from a 12 volt line that used to feed the old coil. and left the wires going to the old electric carb hang there. Plugged all the vac lines that didn't have any useful purpose and ran a new vac line from the carb to the dist.
Just came back from a 350 mile highway trip and got 17 mpg. And the pulling power was a lot better, and around town there is a lot less shifting to do (low end torque is improved, probably because now it has a vac advance instead of the computer telling the dist what to do.)
