I don't know either. It frustrates the heck out of me to see guys getting 15 16 17 mpg and I'm getting 11 and 12. The best I got was on a tank where I took a 300 mile interstate trip....that tank was 14.35. I live in a rural area and most of my driving is short trips on two lane roads...go five miles, stop, go one mile, turn, etc. etc. So it must be the way I drive since my 7.3 didn't do much better. I don't totally flog my truck at every stop, but I don't drive like an old lady either. Hopefully once it is broke in and we're on summer fuel it will get a LITTLE better.
I am driving 15 miles oneway to the job site that i am currently at, 50/50 highway/city. over the last month i have averaged 15.7(total miles driven divided by total gallons used) my truck is getting broke-in nicely with 16,500 miles on her
I just had headstuds installed and my mileage went down to 15's, b4 i was getting 17's, im wondering if its got to break in again or what but i want my mileage back lol
11-12 around town for a stock truck is awefully low. Thats what I get and I'm lifted 16" with 4.88 gears and 40's.
Make sure you guys are hand calculating your mileage...the overhead is not that accurate.
I think your low gears offset the tire diameter. I realize the air resistance from a lifted truck and wider tires should still have some consideration though. My truck gets 11.6 mpg every tank no matter if I tow or not. I will say however, after installing guages, I try to keep my EGT (b4 turbo) as close to 600 degrees as I can and I was able to get 12mpg. I city tow (4,500lbs) almost everyday. If you are getting the same mileage as stock............ I think I might be lifting soon!
Worst tank I can remember was about 16.0, that was highway and towing, best was 21+(pre-flash of 10/04). Average now is about 17.5, I lost about 0.5mpg with the slightly larger 285/16's. I use a fuel additive every tank, and I run syn oil, tires 5lbs below max., egg under foot method most of the time.
I have an '06 F350 PSD LWB, 20"wheels and just came back from Myrtle Beach, SC towing a 36' Montana RV. I got around 9 to 9.5 mpg both ways. I get maybe 10.5 without towing anything. I agree this is not good.
Yesterday 290miles all highway on my 05 cc 6.0 averaged about 15.5 at 75-80 so probably not all that bad. Best I ever got was with my 35's all highway averaged about 17.5 over a 600 mile trip, no idea how.
