I know this is about the third thread I've started on this, but this is a new more applicable overall kind of question. What years will work to do a SAS onto my 1987 F150? I am looking at a '72 that is for pretty cheap, but I've only heard of people using the '77,'78,' and '79 models.....Anyone know if that '72 F150 will work?

big problem is older than 77 and they were drum brakes, so on the 87 you would either have to convert the axle, or change the brake system on the truck. and thats on top of the closed knuckle issue.

Didn't they switch to discs in 76? Or was that just 250s and 350s?

sorry for my axle ignorance, but what is the difference between a closed and (im guessing) an open knuckle, and why is it so bad?

and yeah, not having discs on the front is just not going to happen.

I believe in '76 1/2 is when 1/2 tons went to disc brakes. If you can find a '76-'79 F150 or 78-79 Bronco that is what you will need.

yeah, so i'll definetly can the '72 idea, because I like my disc brakes in the front, and dont really have the time to figure out spindle changes and such.....so to my other question....whats the knuckle differences?

It's not all that hard to swap to disks on a drum brake axle. There are places like Complete Offroad that sell complete kits using the chevy caliper bracket/calipers and spindles with ford hub/rotors. My original sas D44 was from a 73 F150. The issue was that it had smaller u-joints than the 79 D44 and was a king pin axle. I would have kept it under my truck, but I was tired of trying to find parts to mix into it as the only seal that was the same as a regular D44 was the cover gasket and spindle bearings. The truck was a Canadian built truck and I guess Ford was not all that consistant with what they shipped them to put under the trucks. All of the suspension links are the same as the later 77-79 stuff so all of that will work.

closed is a sealed unit filled with grease or oil, open is just the opposite
closed

open

open allows tighter turns, more servicable, easier to replair/inspect

Just to add,
76 or 76.5 was the first year 4wds went to front disc, the 2wds had them in 73.
73-78 had 1310 yokes and joints
79 had 1330

75 was the first year for the F-150

Go check out a couple of junkyards.
Someone has to have a 76-79 F100 or F150 or 78 79 Bronco D44 front.
