well since the 78 was the first year of the BB then it should be a direct swap in unless the mounts are a lil different, which i doubt. the only thing i can think of that would possibly be different is frame width, but i am pretty sure it was the same.
Sorry to jump in on the thread, but how much should one expect to pay for a 78-79 bronco. I just found a 79, rusted out body, but the drivetrain is complete (D44, 9", NP205, C-6) for $1000. Is it worth it?
Jimmy Dean, how much did you pay for the donor truck?
Rustbucket, That is a fair price, If the engine and drivetrain are in good shape. You could use the parts you need and part out the rest. Or you could replace some of the sheet metal and make a dedicated assbuster out of it.
Its already SAS and got 105" wheelbase.
I did this swap in 2001 on my 94F1504x4 using 78 Bronco parts. Currently my 94 sits on 36" TSLs with about 6" suspension and 2" body. This conversion is remarkably easy, with minimal fabrication required. These are the parts I used:
78 Bronco Dana 44
78 Bronco radius arms
78 Bronco radius arm brackets
78 Bronco calipers
78 Bronco tie-rod
90 F3504x4 drag-link (perfect length and fit)
78 Bronco lower coil cups
4" lift Skyjacker coils for a 78-79 Bronco
94 F1504x4 upper coil buckets (stock)
94 F1504x4 front brake hoses
78 Bronco brake line
94 F1504x4 dropped pitman arm (Rancho)
custom 18" adjustable track bar ($40 from local race car shop)
custom front shock mounts (machined)
4" lift front shocks for a 94 F1504x4
4 degree c-bushings for a 78-79 Bronco
Have it aligned to 78 specs WITH the big tires ON
I mounted the track bar on the stock location on the axle to the middle on the engine crossmember, after welding 1/4" thick plate steel to it first. Used a 1" hole saw to cut the mounting hole. This swap took me and my buddy over a week to do, mostly after work at night. Almost all the parts are at the local parts store or the boneyard, Just take your time and measure. I have some swap pics in my gallery. Also, the front driveshaft bolted up perfect after the swap, even the u joints are the same TTB/78 Dana 44.
