actually its 1971 and down that have higher compression and horsepower. how much modifying are you doing? if youre leaving the engine basically stock the only year to stay away from is 1972 because they had really crappy heads. d2ve is the casting number for crappy heads... if its anything but that then youre fine. if youre replacing the heads with aftermarket ones then the year doesnt matter at all because theyre all basically the same shortblock
there is 1 major exception to stay away from 72 motors, they are fairly rare but if you do stumble across one don't pass it up just because it is a 72, and that is the PI motors, the heads are amoung the best comparing with the CJ heads just slightly below and definatly above any of the other factory heads. the casting number is D2OE
my 72 460 had the d2ve heads on it. wasn't a bad running engine but i blew a head gasket shortly after installig it. i just found anoter 460 for her ( a 77 from an ltd ). that one lasted about 4 years then blew the head gasket again. so i foud yet anoter, this one being a 1970 but instead of putting it in the truck i tore it down first and found out that the # 7 piston was shot. so i baught another one, my brother inlaw was getting rid of his 77 class c motorhome so i baught the motor. but by this time the old girl is now stripped to the frame for a full restoration.
