I've searched the posts and will drill and tap for the probe on the driver side exhaust manifold just before the crossover pipe on my 87 6.9 with ATS turbo.
I haven't found much info on the actual drilling technique or angle. Dave S. has drilled straight in from the side, but he had his motor out. I'd rather not pull the manifold off. Can I use some grease on the drill/tap plus some suction, or run the engine? Its easiest to drill straight down from the top, but that might mean more shavings to damage the turbo.
My Autometer probe is 1 1/2" compared to the Isspro 2 1/2".
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks Catfish. From the searched posts, I was under the impression that the driver- side exhaust manifold location was considered pre-turbo, 200-300 deg. higher than post-turbo readings.
Several have drilled theirs with the engine running.
The exhaust will blow the shavings back out the hole.
Make sure you will clear the steering column with the wire.
In my opinion, the exhaust manifold is the best place for the thermocouple.
The pistons are what you want to protect with a pyrometer.
Get the exhaust temp as close to the pistons as you can.
Dave, Thanks. So I do have to be concerned about metal shavings getting into the turbo. How close can I drill to rear edge of the manifold as seen from above, or how far away?
fonefiddy, Its an ATS turbo. I don't see any obvious hole. The only id I can see are A/R 70 and M45. I'm thinking it would be safer to drill the exhaust manifold from below, so any metal shavings would be more likely to fall out.
Thanks, Mike
Hmm, It's suprising that the probe was not installed when the turbo was installed.
Normally the Aftermarket syystems have it drilled into the up pipe, right near the turbo.
What i did was i used a right angle drill worked like a charm, and worked the crap outa my arm, thats what i did it seemed to do the trick, i didn't worry about metal shavings too much most will fall out onto you anyhow but try a right angle drill works really well to drill right at the #8 cylinder just my .02
Thanks cat, I might be able to borrow a drill. I'm now thinking of putting the probe in the passenger-side at the 2nd from last cylinder, because the access looks easier through the rubber splash shield. There are small nipple-like **** about 5/8" where the cylinder ports are. I'm not sure how thick the metal is there.
Anyway, thanks all.
Mike
Thanks all for the help. I placed the probe horizontally on the passenger-side exhaust manifold opposite the 2nd from last cylinder. This was the easiest access point, after removing splash shield and tire.
I was surprised how quickly my EGT's rose to 1000 then more slowly (anxiously watched) to 1100 before I backed off. This was with no load 2500 rpm in 4th up a long steep hill.
I'd always thought my aftermarket ATS turbo on my 87 6.9l wasn't working very well and therefore I didn't need a pyro right away. Now I'm sorry I didn't do this sooner.
I've got the boost gauge ready to put in next to see what's happening with the turbo.
Thanks again,
Mike
