Axle code 29- 8.8 or 9 inch???

I know this thing has got 3.55 gears, but is that an 8.8 or a 9 inch?? The reason I ask is that I was out at the junkyard today and came across a couple fords with some decent parts, and I really want to start learning about gears and all that good stuff, so I'm thinking about buying the axle just to fool around with. It has 8 lug wheel studs and 12 bolts on the differential cover if that helps.

Thanks

im not sure on the code but a 9 inch has no access cover on the rear. the 8.8 does.

29 = Ford WDS or WDD non locking / 3.55-1 / 5300lb axle capacity / 10.25" ring gear.

That'd be a great axle to swap in if you ever plan to offroad/lift the truck. Sterling 10.25 is much much stronger than the 8.8 and 9" axles. Even better if it has a VSS on it.
