O.K. I was wondering if their is any difference between the 8.8 and 9
inch ford axles besides the ring gear. I have a 72 F-100 with the 8.8
and I want to switch to a 3.00 final drive but I can only seem to find this ratio for the 9 inch. Is the third member the same in both? And what about the axle housing itself, is that the same? How about the axles? I've looked at both in the junk yard and I cant tell a difference, in fact the only way I could tell what I was looking at was the build tag. Any help y'all could give me would be great! Thanks.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Sep-02 AT 11:09 AM (EST)]you do not have an 8.8 as they did not make those until 1986. you may have a Dana 44 as that was the optional heavy duty rear end in an F100. the dana has a removeable rear cover but on the 9 inch the whole center section unbolts and comes out the front. no gear parts are interchangeable between any of these three types of rear ends. hawkrod
