towing capacity

Does anyone know the towing capacity of a '86 Bronco w/ a 302EFI and auto. trans? I don't think I have a tow packageon the Bronco. Also would a hitch from a newer Bronco fit mine? Are the frames the same width?

thanks,

Hey Jason I can't help you with your tow hitch questions or frame width but with respect to your tow capabilities which is refered to as your vechicles gross combined vechicle weight rating(GCVWR),just let me say that I just bought a 1990 bronco with a 5.8L which I bought for the purpose of towing an rv and was at a loss to find out it's tow rating until I emailed ford directly at www.ford.com and supplied my vin. inwhich they got back to me within a week with some prodding on my part and told me my gcvwr was 11,500.lbs. keep in mind that your gcvwr is A TOTAL of your Bronco's Gross vechicle weight or gvw which should be posted in your door frame and that weight is a maximum as to how much you can load that vechicle not it's actual weight and then your trailer's full weight. To find out your GVW which should be on your title as an approximate I recommend you have it weighed somewhere and then add your weight plus any passenger and luggage weight and the same for your trailer.

A hitch from an '80 through '96 should work, as the frames are the same width. You may have to drill holes in your frame, but the hitch should bolt up and clear with no problem. If you're buying one used, beware of one thing - there is no clearance between the fuel tank and the frame rail in which to place bolts or a wrench. Most of the hitches come with "fishing" wires which wrap around the bolt threads so that they can be "fished" around the tank and into the frame holes after you drill them. Torquing down on the nuts from below should be sufficient to keep the bolt heads from turning, though some come with shims that lodge against the frame and keep the bolt heads still. Not a big deal or problem, but it may catch you off guard if you're not ready for it.
