86 owners manual info

Chasing the towing capacity charts for a 86 F350,460 with 41 gears.
Been through the FAQ's and numerous threads on towing capacity but have only found charts for 85.
Just need a copy of the charts but if someone has the manual for sale I will take it
Thanks Steve

I could be wrong, but I would think if the '85 lists the same engine/gearbox/final drive ratio that your '86 has there wouldn't be enough difference to matter.

I agree with Tom - there's no difference between 85 and 86, so use the 85 info. You may have found it, but I have the 85 towing info on my site: Towing - Gary's Garagemahal

Thank you gentlemen, about to go a couple of rounds with the authorities on just what my unit can be rated at and this will help
Gary by chance do you have the tables mentioned if you do not have the all the information? Says they followed the tables pictured.

Thanks Steve

I don't understand your question. Can you be more precise or explanatory?

In the written part of your page on towing the second point refers to other tables if the engine/transmission is not known.
Thanks Steve

Oh, you meant the "If the engine type and axle ratio are not known, see the tables that follow the GCWR tables." As it turns out, there are no tables on the pages that follow the GCWR pages that pertain to trailer towing. The GCWR pages are 136 & 137, and:
  • 138 talks about not using clamp-on hitches, what kind of bumper to use, and discusses saftey chains
  • 139 speaks about brakes and lights, and then says that all vehicles can tow up to 2,000 and those properly equipped can tow up to 5,000 lbs - but in no case can you exceed the GCWR.
  • 140 says you cannot exceed the GWR of either axle, nor the GWR of the vehicle, and then discusses tire pressures
  • 141 says vehicles with trailers shouldn't be parked on a grade and discusses how to start one moving
  • 142 talks about the trailer wiring harness and then goes into trailer towing tips such as turning, passing, hill climbing, and downgrades, which carries on into 143, which is the last page of Towing.

Gary,
Thanks for your time a patience.
The plan is for a 5th wheeler/gooseneck setup.
Just need to get it registered with the highest rating I can. Can possibly have an engineer uprate it so looking for any maximum rating info for this year model.

Thanks Steve

Strangely, automatics have a higher towing capacity than a manual gearbox.
I guess the lack of engine braking makes it less likely for the trailer to drive the truck.

Not that strange, if you see how the final drive ratios affect the ratings the auto is the same. The torque convert acts as another gear giving an overall lower gearing

My truck with 4.10's and 6.32:1 first wouldn't break into double digits at redline.
How much do you need?

This is a licensing issue.
I am not worried by the grunt to tow, have a Cummins 5.9 and a RTO610 transmission, final is a 10.25 with later long pinion. Low gear will give around 6.8 MPH at 2000 RPM, that's a fast walking pace.
