I have a 1996 OBDII F150 5.8l with the Ignition Control Module mounted on the driver's side inner fender. When I check at all the local parts shacks (Autozone, Oreilly, Advanced) they show the same part number as the 1995 and earlier which had the module mounted on the distributor and I'm also thinking that pre-1996 is also pre-OBDII . When I install the new ICM (both Autozone and Oreilly) I immediately get both the P1351 and P1359 codes. If I reinstall the old module and clear the codes they never come back...same results from both Autozone and Oreilly parts. Does anyone know if the 1996 OBDII ICM is a different animal than the 1995 and down ICM? Is the 1996 ICM a one year only application?
The other piece of this story is that the Autozone test stand shows my 1996 ICM as failing the dwell portion of the test....Oreilly says the part is good?!
Maybe I need to start going to the dealership for my parts?
As far as I know there is no difference between the 1996 and the 1993-1995 fender mounted ICM.
Second point is from what I have read and understand there are only two places to buy an ICM from, One is the dealership and the other is the salvage yard as long as the one in the salvage yard did not come from an auto parts store (this is where I get mine).
Ford has never released the information as to what is inside the ICM and all the auto parts stores have reverse engineered the ICM.
You are not the first one that has had this problem and one other poster fixed his problem by buying one from Ford after three from auto parts stores.
I've had this code for 10 months now and cant find any one who can fix it.also cant find a black icm anywhere, only the gray ones,my 1996 5.8 had the black one on it,replace it with the gray one, when i ask the parts stores about the black one, they just look back a me and tell me that it take the gray one and that they dont know any thing about a black one or even heard of it.CAN ANY ONE PLEASE HELP ME!
I fixed my problem with a Motorcraft part from the local Ford Dealer. None of the Autozone, Oreilly or Advanced Ignition Control Modules worked on my 1996 5.8.

A gray ICM will not work in your system, as you all ready know.
You have the "Remote Mounted ICM Sealed Distributor Computer Controlled Dwell (CCD) (SYSTEM H)" as all Distributor systems in 1996 have.
The Auto Part Stores have not figured this out yet and will sell the wrong ICM.
The only place to get the Black ICM CCD is from a Ford Dealer.
Here is a diagram of your system "H" CCD and the ICM.
Ok after doing some research and looking at my 1995 I have also have the System "H" and I have a Black ICM.
And my spare I took out of another 1995 and tested it in my 95 is also Black and works OK.
I do not see any differences between 1994, 1995 and 1996 wiring diagrams until they get to the PCM and then if the truck is under 8500 GVW (OBD II) the PCM has different pin numbers.
The 1993 trucks have a different wiring diagram and I would think it to be Gray but 1994 - 1996 should be Black to work right.
thanks for the very good information,i did find me a icm at and auto part store here in my town,it was the oldest parts store that been here for 20 to 30 years and was willing to help me find one,and they had it in stock.i took my grey one back to auto zone and they wasn't sure about what i was telling them about pin 4 and said that the grey one was the right one,but i told them that my code was now gone, and they said it had to be something else and that it would be back.all i know is that my code is gone.and i did put the grey one back on and it came back, then reomve it and put my new black one back on an it gone again.i like to said thanks to everyone who has help me with this and god bless you all.thanks terry1960
Hi guys,
I just joined the forum because I have the same problem with my 96 Ford 460 motorhome. My local ford dealer tells me that the part number for the ICM on my vehicle is a DY1075 (grey ICM). Motorcraft.com shows an optional DY533 ICM that is no longer available. The DY533 supercedes to the DY1075 which is still the grey ICM. I just purchased the motorhome and the previous owner had the ICM changed because the motor quit on him. The check engine light was always on because the catalytic had been stolen. The new cat is on and the only code I am getting is the p1351. Does anyone have a different part number for the black ICM? Thanks in advance.
My dealer says that part number you gave me does not fit the application for my vehicle. The part number you gave me crosses over to a Motorcraft #DY-1077. I'm beginning to think my ICM was grey to begin with but I dont know for sure. Maybe the ICM is not even the problem cause the motor seems to run fine. Any suggestions?

As far as I know and the Ford service manuals say that it should be a black one. Yes it will run OK but not as good as it can with a Black one. If you want to get rid of that code then you would replace it with a Black one. You system should be a CCD that uses the Black one, the Gray one is for the Push Start system.
I do not know what is wrong with your Ford dealer but most of the poster on this site say that there Ford dealer gives them the Black one and it fixes their problem. There has been at least 5 poster that have reported this on this site alone.
