Bought a 2008 Ford F450...2 wheel drive about a month ago. FYI, unloaded, interstate driving gave me 12.7 mpg. In town, stop and go, about the same. Towing a 22000 pound fifth wheel, regular interstate, 8.2mpg. Pulling fifth wheel through the Tennesse mountains, 7.7 mpg. And, the truck is a beast. It laughed all the way through the mountains. Found myself ACCELERATING up the mountain to pass the big trucks. Even had to slow down when I realized I was doing 70mph UP the mountain. Amazing. I only have 1700 miles on the truck. Mileage may improve I'm told.
Is that supposed to be good mpg? Granted my 250 is not as heavy but I have gotten 17mpg on the interstate (stock) with 35's. What does a 450 weigh in at?
My 2003 F-450 which I bought a month ago gets better mpg than my 95 F-450 7.3 which weighed 1000lbs less than the 03 and it only got 12mpg the 03 6.0 gets 13mpg. The 03 weighs 9300lbs empty that is a regular cab 2wd 5spd XL with a 12' flatdeck.
Any "Superduty" F-450 F-550 V-10 powered trucks barely break the 6-8 mpg mark sure you can buy the trucks cheaper but the fuel costs kill you.
It's the 4.88 rear axle that doing it. With my 550 I average 10.9 around town short trips. If I get out on the road than I'll get 14+. Pulling the trailer between 8 and 9.
I"m not at all unhappy with the towing mpg. I think the in town mpg will improve a little as I get more mileage on the truck. It's part of the price you pay to get something big enough to tow the heavier RVs. I can live with it.
From the max payload chart with the 6.4 looks like the 4wd is 8780# the 450 2wd is 8380# and a 250 2wd 137 short bed is 6700# a f350 2wd supercab shortbed is 7090#
a 5.4 f250 2wd reg cab sb is only 5740#. I can feel my 450 has 700# more weight than my 99 350 v10 going up hills it has to work pretty hard. So far only 200 miles around town & rural 13.1 not putting my foot in it.
With my 03 I have 4:30 gears in the rear and I have 6spd manual so that probably explains my better mpg. Where I live I rarely use 6th gear because its to tall to pull the 7-8% grades with a M/T truck.
