I have a 66 f100 with a Fe. It still has points ignition. I am rewiring the truck and thought i would up grade to duraspark or one of the point change over kits. I am wondering if anyone has any insite into any of the conversion kits? I think I can get a kit for a little cheaper than the duraspark stuff. So is one better than the other? IF i do the kit I am thinking Crane. Let me know. thanks
If you go with the Duraspark conversion like I did, replacement parts are at any parts store. If you buy aftermarket, then you may have to wait on replacement parts to be special ordered.
I haven't had a single bit of trouble from my Duraspark conversion in seven years.
I took the guts out of a duraspark dizzy from a 302 or something.....really doesn't matter what it originally went to. I swapped the guts w/ the points stuff in my FE dizzy, and had me what looked like an original Ford Duraspark FE dizzy. And it cost me nothing, except for the duraspark ign. module, and a coil for the electronic ign, because points coils are different. But the module was only $20, and the coil was about the same. It made a world of differnce!
Well the reason i was thinking the crane is that right now I can get it cheaper with shipping than I can get the duraspark stuff. The module and the coil are not bad. I rounded up the wiring i think. The problem has been finding a dizy. I have been looking at rebulit ones and it is the same price as the change over kit. I have not been able to find a used duraspark dizy cheap yet to just switch the guts. If i do the duraspark switch does it use the points mount plate or is the duraspark different? also is the point and duraspark upper shafts the same? thanks
the whole upper shaft part is the same. you use the plate and everything from the duraspark. I can't remeber for sure, but I think I had to drill out a hole for the 2 screws that hold the plate down to the dizzy. One of them lined up, but one did not, but I think that depends on what the donor stuff came from. Either way it's pretty easy to drill one hole...lol
If you take both dizzys apart, you'll be able to figure it all out, it's actually very simple.....IF you go that route anyways.
Do not use the DuraSpark system from 1976/77 with the color coded RED module (D7AZ-12A199-A). These modules were problematic from day one, and continue to fail today. It was these modules that Ford mechanics dubbed "NeverSpark" because that's what they are famous for.
Where the wires feed to the module, there's a color coded small square piece of plastic. There are two BLUE modules, 1975 and 1978/79. Both were very reliable.

I used the dizzy guts out of mid 80's 302's.....they are the easiest to come across. I've done it to 2 points ign. motors so far, and used the 80's stuff. Good to know that the red modules are junk though!
Fastmover, that setup should be very easy to put in your truck, as you don't need to tear the dizzy apart. the plug wires he is talking about will work, becuase he has the dizzy cap that matches them. those wires wouldn't work w/ the points cap though. The only thing I am not sure about is the TFI IV coil. I know a duraspark coil is different from a points coil, but not sure about the TFI. If I was going to guess I would say it will work fine, but just make sure first.
